Did your dealer offer a windshield "insurance" when you bought? I paid $350 that covers me for 3 years to replace my windshield through Toyota.

Also, I know at least in FL, if you have a crack in your windshield, your auto insurance will replace it for free.

Speaking of windshield insurance... I'm in Florida so the windshield is covered if you have comprehensive coverage. This covers ONLY the windshield not any other glass. When my windshield cracked I asked my agent about purchasing full glass coverage (State Farm) and she indicated it wasn't offered in Florida. She did offer to lower my deducible to $0 and that would cover all my glass with no out of pocket. I guessed this would be expensive as I currently have $500 deductible...WRONG! My monthly payment went up less than $2.

Since we all agree glass is expensive maybe there are others out there that could benefit from asking how much it would be to lower your deductible to $0. You might be pleasantly surprised.

In AZ we have 100% glass coverage due to all the rocks that get kicked up on the freeways.

Had my windshield take a hit last Tuesday and cracked 1/3 of the way across, had the windshield replaced on Thursday.

Took a rock to the brand new windshield on Monday, just a chip so far, but I expect it to split before the week is out.

I am in the same boat. I took a rock in my 2018 Sport and called Monday and found out the windshields are on backorder with no anticipated date. There are no aftermarket ones for ours equipped with the Toyota Sense and GoPro mount.

can somebody explain to me, for knowledge purposes, how the glass is different if you have the TSS?
im aware there is a camera attached to the rearview mirror inside but doesnt the mirror attach to the glass the same way?

There is a open, non-shaded place in the glass for the camera to see through. That shaded area might also be larger on the 2018s? There may also be a bonded on bracket for the camera to mount to. The previous MYs didn't have that.

The glass itself is most likely identical to the older Tacos.

With some differences, you could install a 2018 windshield in a 2016 or 2017. You cannot install a 2016 or 2017 windshield in a 2018.

I think it is going to be hard to avoid, but it was one of the reasons that I got a 2017 late in the year versus waiting a short while for a 2018.

Better buy sooner rather than later. They almost certainly will make it mandatory once the tech is a bit more mature. Just like they did with ABS, airbags, traction control, seat belts, backup cameras, and other things I am forgetting.

Just a note. The RR is not yet confirmed for the US. It is said that the sticking point is that the only engine options on the RR in other markets are the 4cyl gas and diesel motors. The Ford folks said that even their 3.0l won't fit. So without a power bump, there is doubt that they will sell it here. I'm not sure why they can't turn the 2.3l EB up to 11?

The Ranger in general will come with the full suite of gizmo voodoo stuff. Beyond that, the single transmission choice crosses it off the list for me.

Had my windshield replaced on my Pro this earlier month. Same windshield had been repaired once. Numerous rock chips...finally a rock hit and cracked the windshield. Been driving this truck for only 8 months.

Any recommendations on the EGR or AVS bug defectors for protecting windshields from flying rocks/gravel?
    Do they work?

Is this from paved roads or dirt/gravel?

I wonder if a non Toyota replacement would lead to increased road noise ? Anyone experienced that ?

You do know about the law of averages right? If not, google it. You are simply proof that that law is correct.

I have been driving since the 1970's. The glass was crap then. Scratched like crazy. Even windshield wipers scratched it within months. So far, I have managed to need a new windshield about once a decade. They broke back then, they break now. I last had a cracked windshield about eight years ago so, according to my law of averages, I will break one in the next few years.
Some people, according to their habits, might go through one or two a year. Some can go a lifetime without replacing.
Don't blame the glass unless you know the manufacturing process and are sure they somehow make glass different than back in the day. Don't blame the vehicle manufacturer because they don't make the glass, they buy from a glass manufacturer that makes glass for multiple vehicle manufacturers. The one thing that will influence the glass breakage is the slope of the window. A really sloped windshield (Prius, etc) won't break near as often as an upright (Jeep, FJ) windshield due to simple physics. Our Tacoma is middle of the road slope wise.

    Lots of sail boat fuel
:facepalm:i give up. From here on out any just Interpret it however you want, and these are just the details. Over a decade of taking higher velocity rocks with higher frequency, due to a necessary evil at work and never cracked. Variables change to me working 3rd shift driving at night on the road by myself for 90% of my driving now and not on working mountain quarries or pipe line contstruction sites and I get multiple cracks back to back in an already specified timline. Law of averages. Probability. Strength and statistics, bad luck. It's all just babble on the internet at this point. So just take my story as a witness account and leave it at that for now.

Is what it is. Already been replaced and paid for. Not that big of a deal. Just an observation.
