I Spray wax back side of the cab once a year - at least it makes me look it over once a year ...

I respect that. You'd probably get like 4 weeks of protection max, but at least you can keep tabs on it.

you dont have to woolwax/fluid film the exterior paint but, it isnt going to hurt it, and in seam areas it will help the op's situation (after repairing the rust damage). by woolwaxing, fluid film, (rustproofing) the back side of the panels, frame, suspension, the "bleeding, creeping" and over spray REALLY HELP prevent this type of corrosion from ever starting. and definitely helps it from progressing to a worse situation . over kill or not, i spray up between the cab and box, i sprayed the back side of all panels HEAVY, and sprayed exposed seam areas with finish on them, then wiped the excess of the finished areas of the seams.

I drive in michigan and northern ontario where they salt, brine, and sand the roads 6-7 months out of the year. over 6000 miles on mine this winter, mine doesnt look like that. matter of fact, my frame, bolts, suspension all have no corrosion. if you want it to last, you have to put the time in to protect it, clean it, maintain it. if you dont, it will be a rusty pile in a short time. it really is up to you. OP, is this on both boxsides or just one? wondering if one of the boxsides was repaired, replaced, prior to you purchasing it. the factory, transporters, and dealers fix new cars all the time, prior to selling without disclosing. truly sorry your are dealing with this. Ski

I have a 2018 that is doing the same thing, although not as severe yet. The color is Cement. Truck has been fluid-filmed, but who sprays between the cab and bed? This is obviously a manufacturing issue that Toyota doesn't care to fix. They figure most people just won't notice it.

I believe their attitude is evident all through this truck. This is my seventh Tacoma and it appears to be the lowest quality, shoddily-constructed truck I've ever owned, and it's loaded with every feature you can get.

I have a topper and Decked system on mine and that is going to be a hassle if it needs to be painted. Someone mentioned that we shouldn't burden the techs with accessories, but I don't have a place to store that stuff in the meantime. Thank you, Toyota.

sadly its trend in the entire truck market. all these new trucks are built poorly it seems. the wonderfully horrible paint they're using these days is "environmentally friendly" and put on by robots.

I worked as a paint engineer at an automotive supplier and it is much more likely that cost-cutting is the culprit. The OEMs want everything for free and that means we are blessed with lower quality, higher-profit, automobiles.

the current gen tundra is the best show case of this.. look at all the features they've removed since 2007.. but for more cost.
my neighbors chevy is suffering from rust on its cab corners already. its a 2019 with 10k on the ODO. they're all guilty of it.

Buddy has a 2020 F150. I doubt it will rust. I wish Tacoma would go the Aluminum route. No rust, less weight = longevity of body, higher payload and better fuel milage. Negative. Expensive to repair but starting to get cheaper.

Guess I will be keeping an eye on those spots. Thank OP for posting on this. Really wish the world was perfect and you didn't have to.

watch what you ask for. in the rust belt, there will be worse failures than rust, on aluminum bodied autos. we have saw it in the body shops for years. hood's with galvanic corrosion under the paint from chips, allowing water in/under the finish. take a seam add water, sand, dust, you effectively have sand paper... there is where the damage starts. vibration of normal driving cause these areas to rub, flex, etc... and you get what you get.

Dude I have the same issue between the cab and bed on both sides, just discovered it today and my 2019 is less than a year on the road. Taking it in next week. Did you get any word on what their plan is to fix??

Dealer said they don't look at it and send it to their body shop to make the determination but theres a 5 year warranty on paint issues.... body shop isn't "essential" so he said call back in a month... TBD

Meanwhile saw several frame swap stacks out behind the dealership.... cringeworthy

It boggles my mind how Toyota management (lowercase intentional) can allow this to go on and on for decade(s?).

haha maybe after they address the issue, picked it up today and at least the service dude was sympathetic and reminded me to call back in a month or so when the body shop they use might be open again
