If it makes the noise longer, I can turn the key off, then immediately restart perfectly with no noise at all. That a clue to be anyone?

Can't tell what it may be, from video. But like you mentioned, possibly starter. Bending not fully retturning.

If you are referring to the machine-gun-like noise after the engine starts, I don’t see how that could be the starter unless you are turning the key to start, but even then that has a much different sound in my experience.

Anyway, I think I heard that noise in someone else’s video, but I don’t remember their being any explanation other than “normal”. It sounds somewhat like the hydraulic brake booster on my truck, but not the same. Perhaps someone else can offer a better answer.

If the bendex gear is not pulling back, weak spring. The gear will bounce off flywheel causing that noise.

Take the serpentine belt off and start it cold. That will eliminate:
    1. Fan noise so you can hear the noise better.
    2. The possibility of anything in the accessory drive is causing the noise.

Listening to it again I think it's the air injection pump. That's when they run, on a cold start.

ecenter, I have exact noise / rattle in my 2007 2.7L Tacoma. Yours is also 2.7.

I plan to have an new starter OEM installed in the next few weeks. (Possibly much sooner, as the rattle was really bad today.) My local shop also suspects starter. But I don't rule out something else. Truck has 227k miles and starter is original, so I'm ok replacing it, as process of elimination.

Rusty66, thanks I will also research air injection pump.

My truck's rattle started quieter and intermittently over the last 6 months or so, got worse, more frequent over the winter, calmed down when warmer weather arrived, then picked up again (northern New England).

I'll try to post an update in a few weeks. I' m planning to keep truck long term, so would like to figure it out.

Please let me know. I replaced several other things. It stopped completely for 3 months and I thought I had it fixed. Well…it has done it twice in the last week, after nothing for 3 months; at exactly 50 degrees in the morning after a warm day and a lot of driving the day before. I kinda don’t think it’s the starter anymore. Who knows?? I’m also suspecting the air injection pump. Still seems oil or oil pressure related. I say that, because it made the same exact noise after a fresh oil change. Not on first start up that night I did the service, but first morning after the oil / filter change. I change my own with OEM Toyota filter and Mobil One full synthetic, high mileage. I’m starting to agree with so many answers, on many other forums….Gremlin

I decided to just go ahead and replace the air injection pump, and the related valve, with Toyota oem parts. Not cheap, but the aftermarket pumps are crap, and I try to stick with oem anyway. The work is getting done in early May. I'll post an update.

My shop was cool with doing this instead of the starter. We agreed it could be either, but given my high mileage and plans to keep truck long term, its not a bad idea to update it anyway. My shop hadn't really diagnosed this fully (we decided to skip it) but just has my complaints of weird noise on cold starts.

FYI the air injection pumps were in Tacoma 2.7l engines from 2007 to 2011 (approx)and later. But V6's didn't get them until around 2012 (and those were problematic and subject to recalls.)

The earlier pumps function only on cold starts, not shutdown. (Maybe later 2.7's too? not sure.)That explains why I thought it was the starter until I learned about the pump issue. Some of later pumps function on start and shutdown, and those can make strange noise on shutdown.

I still get intermittant cold start rattle. Not bad but I'd like to get it fixed. At this point, I've had a new oem secondary air injection pump installed, and related valve, by an independent mechanic. Starter still original, 229k miles.

The Care care nut channel has several videos on fixing VVTI engine cold start rattles. If applicable, looks like a job requiring experienced Toyota mechanic. It seems that it's other engines, not Tacoma, more notorious for this, though.

I'm taking the truck to a Toyota/Lexus specialist ndependent shop in June. I would have done so sooner, but I'm more than 100 miles away from any Toyota specialist mechanic or dealer shop.

Also, about a year ago, I began regularly using the "Clutch Start Cancel" button when starting my MT truck, even on cold starts. Not sure if that impacted anything, but I'll stop that for the time being.
