The Automatic has taller overdrive gears, and the axle ratio is 3.8:1 vs 4.3:1 for the manual tranny. That and the Sport has street oriented tires that likely have lower rolling resistance, and it has the chin spoiler as well, good for 1 mpg from what i hear.

Without the torque converter, the engine could never pull such tall gearing. At altitude, i already have to slip the clutch much more than i’d like to get moving - especially in Reverse

If you get the 2wd 4 cyl, you will not be complaining about the trans. You will be harping about something else. Just saying

Well while we are at it, I have a noob question.
My first upgrade will be better tires. Can I put BFG AT’s or Cooper st maxx on the stock wheels and stock configuration? Or do I need different wheels and lift?

The trans that was paired with the 4cyl has never been a complaint that I know of. It's the v6s that people complain about

Probably more to do with the expectation of power, 4cyl to 6cyl.
