    Summit racing breaks it down.
The difference is that struts do other jobs too. They are integral suspension components. If the strut were removed, the vehicle could not drive or steer.
Struts serve as a structural link between the vehicle and the spindle/knuckle. There is no upper control arm. The strut attaches directly to the spindle/knuckle.
Coilover Shocks are easy to confuse with struts because of the coil spring. The reason they are not struts is that they are not an integral component. If you remove a coilover shock, the vehicle will fall down onto the bump stops. However, it can still technically drive and steer. The tires might rub, but they won’t fall off

TRD sport? If so then they need replacing. The hitachis are crap IMHO.

When I owned a gen1 tundra the stock kyb struts were toast at 80k miles, but the original kyb rear shocks last nearly twice as long. The front end would bottom badly every time you hit a dip in the road.

Unless you always drive on smooth highways I'm betting all your previous Tacos needed struts at 80K miles. I know mine needs some new ones at this point. Never could tell much from pushing on a truck spring to test, I go by ride or leaks.
