I have decided to give my 2004 Tacoma (349,000 worry free miles) to my grandson.
I’m buying a 2019 Tacoma trd sport with manual transmission. The one I want to buy is 250 interstate miles from me. My local dealer has offered to trade inventory with the other dealer.
My dealer tells me that putting the truck with 12 miles on it on I 75 and doing 75mph for 4 hours to bring it to me shouldn’t concern me. It does, am I wrong?
    Thanks

yep. you're wrong. Don't worry about it, just drive the damn thing.

As a 20 year mechanic, I have never seen any reason to do anything but drive it home from the dealer, just like they said.

I can assure you that you will be running the engine rpm's up and down, down-shifting/up-shifting, braking moderately, cruising, basically all of the things that you will be doing on a regular basis anyway. Kudos, btw, for giving your old truck to your grandson.

    Welcome Mike!
You are supposed to vary speed and rpm during break in period which is like 500 miles if I recall. Can you have someone drive you out there and you drive it back? If so, romp on it a bit at first to help the rings seat then drive her home!

If you want to ensure the pistons, rings, seals and all the gaskets in the motor get properly sealed/broken in, just drive it like you stole it from day 1. If it can't handle being driven at 100mph the first day, that motor was never going to last anyways.

I don’t blame you. If it affects anything it won’t be immediately it will when it has 100k plus on it. I told my dealer to order it or haul it or I’ll go elsewhere. It’s been ordered.

Also, they drive the vehicle at the factory and the dealer before you ever do. So it's already been at full operating temperature a few times before you even sit in it. Just drive the damn thing and enjoy it.

Mine was driven about 400 miles to my local dealership. I wasn't concerned and the warranty paperwork states the mileage when I took delivery of the truck, after my test drive, so that's where the warranty mileage starts. Get your truck and enjoy it.

Do not drive at a constant speed for extended periods.

This is the part of Toyota’s recommenced break in that confuses me. What qualifies as “constant” and “extended”?

"Constant" means don't use cruise control. "Extended periods" means more than 3 feet.

Come on, it's not a performance motor. It's a tried and true Toyota motor that's been around for a while. Just drive the damn thing.

Just vary the rpms. Downshifting works great and keep the same speed. The only thing an engine ever sees is rpm and load. And don’t worry too much about break in. Just drive it! I did change my oil and filter at 1500 miles

Personnaly, the only "break-in" I've ever done on a new motor is an oil change somewhere between 500-1000 miles. Just for piece of mind.

You’ll be fine driving it home from dealer. If you feel that you need to not set cruise and drive 73 mph for 3-1/2 hours then don’t use cruise and drive varying speeds from 60-80 on the way home.

Sounds ridiculous and it is. Drive it normal it’ll be fine. Personally I’d avoid towing extremely large loads and long idle times in break in period but that’s basically it.

I have 2016 SR 2.7L. I have to practically stand on the gas pedal to get it to hit 95.

Interstate driving will be fine. There will be enough construction, getting behind and around 18 wheelers, and left lane campers on the way that whoever is driving will not be doing a constant speed the whole time.
