Seeing the hole from this perspective makes me feel slightly more self-conscious about my skill level bc I couldn't make it out, it doesn't look nearly as bad (vertical) as I thought it did in the driver seat. (if anyone has video of the futile attempts PM them to me so I can see how/where to do better) I've got a lot to learn. First of which is how hard I can push the truck without the imminent threat of breaking something.. but that would require breaking something to learn where the line is. Had a great time meeting everyone, thank you again @rblalliance for being so generous and sharing your campsite with me. I will be posting some photos and video over the next few days.

Don't be. It never looks as steep as it really is in the pics. That said, ATRAC in the 2nd and 3rd gen Tacos doesn't seem to work as good as it does in my 3rd gen T4R.

Is there supposed to be a button for this ATRAC ? I'm a base model so all I had were VSC and RSCA.

A trac is a option for a TRD Offroad in a 2nd gen Tacoma. Its kinda like a locker for the front.

It's not on the SR5s as well? My T4R is an SR5 and it has VSC and ATRAC, but it doesn't have a button to turn either off. VSC shuts off when the center diff is locked while the ATRAC is on all the time unless there's a fault in the system. @michaelrussell 's Prerunner has it, I know for sure, but it's an SR5, IIRC.

Regardless, on Kai's 3rd Gen TRD OR it wasn't doing squat.

Are you referring to the Trac option if so it applies traction to the wheel that has the least amount of traction automatically. A trac is similar, but it has a switch to enable it in 4 lo . I know in the Offroad it applies traction to the two front tires which ever one has the least amount of traction.

Technically, it applies the brakes to the tire with the least amount of traction (the one spinning wildly) sending the power to the tire with the most traction. But, yeah, it is called TRAC on my T4R. Figured they called it ATRAC when they added a switch for it.

At any rate, you can actually see it working in the vid of my T4R.

Yeah exactly , A trac plus the rear locker is a nice option. I had to use it last year going around the nasty corner

It's a nice option, rear locker or not. My T4R had no issues with anything at Citrus, including the corner of 8 and 19, even with your old 32" Trail Grapps that were pretty worn down by that point. I just wish it had a switch to turn the VSC off in 2WD. If I had a wiring diagram for the 4WD system, I could probably spoof the VSC/ABS computer into thinking it was in 4WD with the center diff locked, but I don't plan to have it off road much. The only real workarounds I've seen have required you to restart the vehicle to reset the VSC after you've disabled it, which is no bueno, IMHO.

I've found Atrac in the mud slick shit worthless. Starts braking any wheel with too much spin, bogs you down.

Well, I'll repeat some of the stuff I said in on the TTS page...

Overall impression is, I'm pleased with everything so far. It didn't immediately pop the CVs as soon as I put it in 4WD so that's a big plus. It did almost everything I wanted it to except that unconquerable damn mud hole. The one time I put it in 4Lo to climb a 3-4' near vertical ledge, it crawled right up with no issues, so at Citrus, at least, I don't think I lost anything with the True Trac vs the Lincoln locker. Hardrock, as always, will be the true test though. If I can survive a rock garden without breaking things, I think I'll be ready for an out-of-state trip.

As far as the gear/tire combo, it was awesome on the high speed sections of the trail. There was a lot of throttle response and it was a lot of fun. On the other hand, going up the obstacles in 2WD Hi, I still don't have enough gear/power. Conversely, on the flat roads, at 60, I found myself hunting for a higher gear a couple of times, where as on the bigger hills on Pleasant Groove, it was struggling to maintain speed. I think the ideal combination would be a little more power (fresh engine and maybe a blower. I never really pin the throttle so I'm not sure how well a small Nitrous kit would work for me) with an automatic transmission, a Taco Box, and 4.88 gears or 4.56s with a manual trans since the A340F has a higher OD gear than the R150F does.

On the fuel mileage front, I thought it was pretty awful at first, especially since it went from an eighth of a tank to dead on E between the campground and the gas station in front of the Walmart on 44, but once I got home and calculated the mileage, I was getting ~12.4 MPG not accounting for my ODO being slightly off. For three quarters of the tank being burned on the trail, that's not terrible.

At any rate there's still a lot of parts waiting to be installed...winch, rear bumper, traction bar, rock lights, etc...

Again, the 3rd Gen T4R traction control seems to be a superior system. I walked around the slick-ass corner of 8 & 19 with hardly any wheel spin...on 32s with open diffs, only the traction control to keep it from being a 2WD. I've seen 4WD Tacomas on 33s struggle with that corner in 4WD with open diffs.

Conversely, the VSC does that to me in 2WD on the deep sand corners. It won't let the rear end get any tire speed so it's pretty much easier to just pretend to be a Jeeper and leave it in 4WD the whole time.
