Great read. I always liked the guy’s attitude, just think maybe he came into F1 a little too soon?

    Here’s a funny story:

When my wife and I were leaving Austin after the Grand Prix weekend we decided to grab some food at the airport. So we’re sitting in a little food court area and I hear someone spill their drink and some laughter...turn to look behind me and it was Brendon Hartley. Never would have noticed him, wearing green and black sweatpants and a hat. No F1 gear at all. So I spotted him because he knocked over his drink lol

About 20 minutes later we’re at our gate which is a couple down from the flight going to Mexico City, I see him again. Decided just to say hi...something along the lines of “great weekend Brendon, cheers” and he said something like “aww thanks mate, hopefully more to come”

Good times. I also spotted a shitload of race engineers from Renault and force India (or whatever they were called), it was neat seeing all that in the airport haha

Not even F1 and WRC but all racing. Was watching a show from BBC Three about Knife Gangs in England. One of the guys who a rather good Gamer kid who wanted to race. They arranged for him to go to a talent program for F3. He pretty much went through the "tryouts" to see if the company would even be interested in him. The kid passed every test in the 99th percentile, broke the simulator track record, and a few other things. The BBC reporter talked to the talent scout guy and the scout guy pretty much said they would love to have the kid in their program and he had major potential. But with no sponsorship or money their was nothing they could do.

Its sad to think how much talent in all sports is left out due to $$

In 197— I dunno, not sure — we were sitting in the diner in downtown Watkins Glen the Monday after the race. We always stayed at the track Sunday night because of the horrendous traffic jam. We were sipping our coffee and smoking our cigarettes when who should walk in but Lord Hesketh and James Hunt, looking all the worse for wear after their inglorious weekend and no doubt debaucherous follow party. As we walked out we nodded to let them know we knew, but otherwise left them to their own coffee and smokes.

You’re right, it is cool seeing them as regular humans.

I saw Alonso in old town Montreal driving a Maserati along the road , he was at a stop and I was looking at the car , didn't realize it was him till he was about to pull away . That was back when he was still with Ferrari , I had my Ferrari polo on and he gave me a bit of a grin and he was gone .

Also saw Kamui Kobayashi and Paul di Resta

not F1 but.. I worked for a chevy dealer back in the day and they raced a camaro in scca, I was part of the crew, well we had a race at Pocono Int. and the Trans Am cars were there, we got into a water gun battle with Paul Newman and some of his people. Fortunately for us, we had the "new" battery powered water gun, and pretty much soaked em. he was a regular guy and very approachable at the track, wife scored an autographed poster with our win!!
