How much does it cost to win an F1 manufacturers title? Mercedes spent over $383M in 2018 (£311.4M). I would bet that Ferrari spent significantly more than that. Any new competitor would need to spend much, much, more than $311M to be competitive due to initial investments in facilities and equipment.

Wow typhoon mayhem. No FP3, quali Sunday, FP2 times might determine the starting order. Hope everyone makes it through the hard weather in good shape.

Last three nights I have been watching seasons 1999-2004 in review on YouTube. Each season is about 3 hours long. This is during MS/ Ferrari glory years. Few takeaways from watching. First is the brutality of the V10 engine sound, simply amazing. This is what got me interested in F1 is the amazing sound of the engines. Second was a lot of DNF’s at times with mechanical issues which made the races very unpredictable. Third is two manufacturers for tires really mixed things up. The cars did not pace themselves for tire wear, they ran flat out! Fourth is way more passing than currently even without DRS. Few other points but it truly is eye opening how what used to be at the forefront of cutting edge tech is now a fancy spec series almost. Sad.

 

Explain to me how the current engine formula is not a the forefront of cutting edge tech

 

What I mean is the engineers no longer have free reign like they used to. The engines have to last so long, have a fuel flow limit & no outside the box design anymore. F1 should not be about using less fuel & reliability to the point were nobody runs the engines to the maximum. Fact is you can’t now because they have to last so long. I say remove the fuel flow limit & give them 11 engines per season so basically have to last 2 races.

 

Aren’t these 1.6 V6 almost to the same power level as those V10’s but with way better fuel consumption and at a 50% thermal efficiency compared to the 30% of the V10. F1 has always been about cutting edge tech and to me that seems cutting edge

 

cutting edge to the engineers who are into thermal efficiency. heavy cumbersome pigs to the race drivers. not at all cutting edge from that POV.

I can go either way with the first incident as Max has a reputation for being aggressive in the corners and has lost traction into Leclerc before with no penalty. Leclerc not coming in and leaving the track a mess with fiber parts and almost nailing Hamilton in the head with debris is just a dumb move by the driver.
