I've found a 2019 Tacoma TRD OR but I've just learned of the fuel pump recall. Should the pump be a deterrent from buying this? I've looked at the 2020's also but the price is better on the 2019. Any feedback would be appreciated.

No, it’s a recall, Toyota will fix it. They don’t have a new part yet, though

Mine was in the recall and sure enough it crapped out a month ago. Dealer happened to have one in the parts room but the mechanic said it is of the old recalled design but they were allowed by Toyota to put it in and get me back on the road. It may crap out again but it should get to Sept. They are no longer making the fuel pump for our trucks and supposedly the new one will be available in Sept. There are a few guys on here driving loaners for months that we’re not so lucky.

Very Very Very rare. The internet makes it seems worse than it is.

I've changed one 2018 pump on a failed Tacoma. Thats it.

Is it just because of the potential danger then?

Yes, the idea is, if the truck stalls on the highway it's a danger, thus a safety recall.

Toyota takes this seriously unlike the big 3 domestics that just let you call a tow truck.

They seem less worried about having people’s frames break in half from rust. When it comes to rusting out frames they take a less heroic approach.

Because the frame doesn't rust out in 6 months or 3 years. Takes a good bit of time and a lot of neglect on the owners part for knowing they live in a rust prone area.

I do not show a recall of any kind against my VIN. Was it just a bad batch of fuel pumps that were traceable?

2020 is not part of the recall.

I have a 2019 Tacoma TRD Pro and just put my VIN into the Recall on their website and mine doesn't come up as being part of the fuel pump recall. That being said if you have the VIN number of the truck you are looking at purchasing you can put it into the site and see if it is listed as a recall for that VIN. I don't think it would deter me from purchase, however I would see if they could fix it before you take ownership or at least note it on the paperwork somewhere.

Just curious, with such a large part of the Toyota consumer products being affected by the fuel pump recall, I wonder if most dealerships will setup dedicated bays to pump changes. If everyone of the senior mechs are doing pump recall r&rs those guys won't be happy. Just curious how that works.

I just found a car, it breaks every once in a while and needs maintenance, should the fact it needs maintenance be a deterrent from buying cars in general?

The fuel pump in my 2019 TRD Off Road gave out a few weeks ago. The dealership had it for one day and replaced it with what they had on hand and put my name on the list for when the recall pumps come out. Still love my truck and glad I got it.

sure.... it’s the owners’ fault that their Toyota frames rust through because they don’t coat it with fluid film twice a year, while “The Big Three” don’t have a fraction of the problems with rusted frames. That’s irrelevant. Toyota is always above reproach.

It's a known issue in the rust belt.
It should be routine maintenance like washing and and waxing your paint.
Do the research on your 30k to 40k purchase.
Might as well never change the oil either.
    Fug it! It's a Toyota!:woot:

This is not, and never will be just a Toyota problem. Toyota just actually replaces them.

Ever been used car shopping before?

I'm guessing you've never taken a magnet to a used cars' frame before and discovered bondo...
