I would rather a remove and replace, from both the customer and tech point of view. The tech can make more money on the R&R and the customer gets a less molested transmission.
Also, if the tech just replaces the bad parts, did he actually diagnose and find the cause of the failure to begin with. If he just replaces the bad part and does not verify the cause, it could happen again.

Most manufacturers, especially Japanese brands prefer shops to leave the transmissions alone and send a reman or new unit. It's cheaper than having the inhouse rebuild fail and customer perception worsen.

So if you take off a part on a new truck, regardless of what that part may be, and you replace it with a new factory part or even a new aftermarket part does that now make the truck somehow less new? You're getting a new tranny and now your truck will be even newer. Demand a Prius for the loaner while yours is in the shop and you'll be happy as shit when you get your "still new" Tacoma back.

The “I must be compensated for something I see as unacceptable” is the new battle cry for men in early menopause.

It’s disgusting how many people feel they DESERVE, in regards to basically everything. The reality is, you deserve nothing. And you’re going to die one day.

    A Tacoma transmission fails:

    "The warranty should fix that"
    "Sometimes these things happen"
"Parts sometimes fail, it's not perfect"
"Why are you posting on the forum? The dealership should handle it."

    A Ford transmission fails:

    "Omg Ford is a POS!!"
    "Ford is so unreliable omg!!"

You’ll be made right, OP. You’ll get a new transmission, and that’ll be the end of it. There won’t be a sea of freebies.

I like your style. I'm not sure what has come over folks, it seems a large part of society has been deliberately and maliciously wronged, and must be compensated for their time and anguish.

exactly, also to add to your point toyota pays dealerships a reduced hr/rate for warranty work. dealerships would rather throw a part on than have a tech rebuild the trans at 50/hr for 5 hours when he could be billing a regular customer 100/hr to fix a problem on an older vehicle

it used to be a small segment of people that would join communes or have been committed to mental institutions. Sadly most of those have closed.

It’s probably how they were raised. I was raised by my grandfather, and his demographic is a little more logical and rugged than the parents of a lot of my childhood peers.

Dealership service departments simply replace defective parts and do not tear into them anymore. This is America where we trash and discard everything that doesn’t work. Just throw it away in your local landfill. You can put a lot of the blame on the manufacturers, it’s called planned obsolescence.

Grab your manual transmissions while you can. I highly doubt that the 2023 4th generation Tacoma will offer a 3-pedal option. The 2020 Corvette ditched it and they had a 15% take rate on the C7. The 3rd generation Tacoma take rate is around 5%. It simply doesn’t justify the development costs.

This is what subaru did for my 2.5RS's blown trans @ 27k miles. It took them three months and the parts list, excluding actual pricing, ended up being four pages long, it began to fail again at 65k miles

    Social evolution.

I was raised by people who for the most part kept matters to themselves.

Whining about anything would bring disdain.

If somebody wronged you, you handled it and usually didn't talk too much about it to anyone who didn't need to know.

This social media is a monster that must be fed- it encourages people to communicate their issues and/ or accomplishments ad infinitum.

As far as op and his problem- if my truck needed a new transmission at such an early age, I would not be a happy camper.

    @INDOMITABLE

Hope the dealership does a competent job and makes this right.

Who's taking bets that the replacement feels the same? Ohh the tacoma MT... Notchy, grindy, rattling farm truck of a trans. Feels tough as nails to me!

The bad one does not get thrown away. It will be shipped back to Toyota warranty department, they will tear it down and find the casue of failure. This information will be used in research and in case of multiple failures of the same type. It will then be rebuilt and used as a re-man part. On high dollar items such as this, typically, the dealership does not recieve warranty credit until the part is returned.

How did they diagnose a bad Trans? Did they also check your clutch and hydraulic fluid system and or correct Trans fluid level? I had the clutch replaced in mine before 1000miles if I remember correctly, I was having some notchy shifts, difficult to pull out gear and started hearing a bearing noise when clutching in. They diagnosed an overtorqued pressure plate with the bolt heads stripped, this was causing clutch drag. Got a new clutch, flywheel and pressure plate, problem solved. I also swapped the factory fluid for MT90 and T shifts even anther now

Don't worry OP. You'll get your truck fixed, ask the dealer, maybe they can get you an extended warranty.

Not disagreeing with you, just sharing how things used to operate with Toyota: our 1998 T100’s alternator went bad at a mere 200K miles, so we ordered a re-manufactured one from the dealership of original purchase. I remember my Dad being unhappy that he wasn’t paying for a new unit. The parts Manager explained the issue away, saying that with Toyota it was just as good as new equipment. My Dad asked what was going to happen to the bad alternator off of his truck, and the manager said that it would be flown back to Japan for a complete inspection, and that cause of its failure would be found. Then, the faulty component(s) would be replaced, and it would live again as another re-manufactured unit. My Dad, who was a Ford guy in his youth, was understandably surprised.

Planned obsolescence didn’t always figure into the equation.

Also hope you’re wrong with no MT option on next gen Tacoma, but you’re probably not. Whether there is an option or not might depend a little on where the competition goes, I don’t know.
