We have a 2019 TRD SPORT, 19,000 mile purchased from carmax(not liking them right now) 2021, CEL came on and they’re are saying we may need “ head work”. My question is what would cause that on such a young vehicle? Have you had any experience with this issue?

What codes is it throwing to make the CEL come on? Don't agree to anything until you know what codes are being triggered. Could be a very simple fix but you won't know until you read the codes man!

Is it in the service department of a Toyota dealer?

Could be many things but you have a 5year/60K powertrain warranty. Make sure you are going through Toyota not Carmax.

Thank you very much, are you saying I should get the exact code that shows up and then look up the code , for example, on internet?

Also, this is a Toyota dealership.

Cool. Good thing it is under warranty. They’ll hopefully make it like new.

And fyi, it’s very possible Carmax did not detect any issues.

Yes, remember that knowledge is power! They can tell you anything they want and without knowing what codes are causing the CEL to come on, you have no ability to question the validity of what they are saying.
PS: I am not saying that they are lying to you, but to quote the great Ron Reagan, "trust but verify!"

There have been a few cases around of burnt valves, apparently a manufacturing defect.

If we're starting a pool, I'll take that block please.

It’s p11ec, they cleared the code and said to return if it shows up again, I may sell it what do you think?

Why would you sell? You have a truck with a warranty. If clearing the code doesn't fix it, Toyota should be doing a bit more investigating to figure out what it takes to fix it.

I think you should read the link in post 13, then look at post 11. Just so you keep me in line in the betting pool.

    Best of luck.

My thoughts? You have a dealership that hasn't had to deal with this issue yet, so it's 'unexpected' and they aren't quite sure what to do, other than send you on your way with fingers crossed. Since you still have the warranty, it needs to be fixed before any consideration of selling comes in play.

or maybe buy an extended Toyota warranty before you hit 3 yrs/36k miles. I doubt they will budge, but maybe ask Carmax to buy or split? But they will probably want to use their aftermarket warranty, and I am not a fan of most of those, and neither are most techs.
