Good advice. Rattle snake might die of laughter watching me running away screaming. That wouldn’t be my fault.

Me too. I had a close run in with a snake in Del Puerto Canyon. We were hunting frogs at dusk and all of a sudden all the insects went quiet and we heard the rattle nearby. The we heard the pistols cocking and my friends dad telling us not to move or breathe. I was about 11 or 12 at the time.

To be clear, I've dealt with a lot of snakes and I have never killed any of them. I was just going along for the purpose of humor. I completely agree with your statement above.

Sorry, didn't intend to imply that you did. I just know it's common for people to kill them indiscriminately and I hope that attitude can change. So I try to be vocal about it. I think it's awesome that you do relocating, certainly does more good than me just flaunting my opinions on an internet forum.

Maybe you'd think differently if they were all over your homesite. I have a buddy who lives in Texas, and the rattlers are everywhere. He kills them on sight. I'm certainly not going to argue with him about his practice. He's even found them in his house. Me, I'm a chickenshit. If I see one I'm moving the other way as fast as I can.

I suppose that's true as well, but I think it's one thing if it's your home, and another if you're out in nature or wilderness.

I've spent my entire life in California. Been outdoors most if it. Backpacking, hunting, fishing. I've only seen one rattlesnake in the wild. And that one was a baby. And on Catalina Island. You make enough noise, you'll probably end like me, and never see them. I'd like to keep it that way.

Since I live in the wilderness, there's a strong likelihood I'll come across one eventually on my property; if/when that happens, I also plan to go a different direction.

I’ve seen lots of rattlers and it’s definitely easier to just go around them IMO.

Know someone who’s young kid was bit on their property trying to pick one up.

Had seen dad pick up gardener snakes and the kid thought it was one.

Luckily it was a dry bite and he was ok. Scary though.

It’s almost always a dry bite. Like 3 out of 4. Adult snakes won’t waste the venom unless you really piss them off. Juvenile snakes don’t have the same control over it so they’re more likely to poison a bite.

At least according to the wilderness first aid courses I take at work.

Either way taking antibiotics after a bite is probably a good idea.
