The general consensus is that if you baby the throttle your MPGs will fall and if you gun it will obviously fall as well. The sweet spot is knowing how much push you need so when you lay off the gas, you're at the speed you want to be and under 2k rpm.

I've gotten 23mpg driving 40 miles and back every day during the winter. Literally up hill both ways.

Well, looking at the 2020, engines offered, and looks like they did not change the engine, still the 3.5.
    I appreciate the feedback.
Maybe I should have asked,,,”What do u like about the2019 OR”

I’ve put 1800 miles on it so far and done it all as far as the throttle is concerned. No idea what I’d be doing differently than anyone else.

Bigger wheels? Different gas, who knows. This is my second 3rd gen and I had 23mpg on the other one as well. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    Just sharing my experience.

Maybe different gas. I’m in Texas where it’s pretty flat and I can’t get anywhere near 23. Stock tires and size, no lift.

If you're in an extremely cold climate and make a fair amount of short trips this will adversely affect mpgs. I make a 3.7 mile trip the gym 4-5 days a week and even when it's just in the 40s or 50's and I hit all of the lights this nets about 16 maybe 17 mpg. Other trips around town that are 10 miles plus, mileage jumps up quite a bit. You should see a big improvement when summer gas comes around.

Piling on to the 'test drive' posts.

And be sure to drive at least your daily route. Some guy was here recently that test drove only on all flat ground. He felt everyone here was nuts, and did the deal

But his daily was up hills and the shifting was making him nuts.

If one truck doesn't feel good, try another.

PS. You'll do better selling your '08 outright than trading. Regardless of what they say they are 'giving' you for it.

    Good luck with the process!

I've got about 400 miles on my 2019 OR automatic, and I'm happy, not sure what all the bitchen is about on the engine/trans. Is it a torque monster? Uh, no, but it drives well. I'm coming from a 2012 Sequoia with the 5.7 that has the off idle torque of an electric motor, yet still has through the range HP, so it's not like I'm coming from a slug. Every year vehicles will get more and more efficient, and often that means getting used to their engine mapping, gearing, trans, etc etc, just the way it is. So farMPG 50/50 is just over 20 mpg, much better than the combined 50/50 12.5-13.5 of the Sequoia.

I get better mpg than you in my '17 automatic and I have a front bumper, sliders, lift and 285 tires. I'm getting 17-18 mpgs. If you have an automatic it'll "learn" your driving style (or you'll learn it's powerband) and your mpgs should go up. Mine were pretty crappy the first year I owned my truck too.

I've got right at 1000 miles on my 19 OR and I really like it. I had a 2012 F150 with the weakoboost. With my driving style, the 3.5 seems plenty powerful for everyday driving. I haven't gone out to play in it yet but on the road commuting, I'm digging it. The dealership I got mine from has a test drive route that's very similar to my daily drive so I was able to get an accurate feel for it.

I will echo some of the previous posts that the MPG was a bit shocking at first but it definitely "learned" my driving a little and improved but I'm still around 18/19 or so. I was also upset they did away with the driver side storage in the bed. I upgraded from a 2007 OR and this is my first brand New vehicle but the suspension seems really stiff. Overall I still like it.

The Apple CarPlay, adjustable seats and refined technology seems to be preferred...not to mention the headlights are LED on the 2020

    I have a 2019 DCSB OR and came from a 2000 Silverado 2500 HD and 1999 TJ...

I am thrilled with my Tacoma! It’s a happy medium between my TJ and the Silverado. It rides nice, has plenty of power and shifts fine. I love the interior styling, the seats, features and off-road capabilities. I did do some upgrades on suspension, tires, skid plate, grill, and a few other odds and ends...

I don’t get all the complaining other than to say whatever bugs these guys are talking about I think they got them worked out on the 2019s...

Have a 19 TRD OR as my profile indicates - it has been a wonderful vehicle thus far.

Is it perfect? Nope, no vehicle is.

    Problems? None.

    Fun as hell? You bet.

Contentions? The stock tune of the ECU due to EPA regulations, primarily. The engine has plenty of power and the tranny is reliable - the tune itself leaves much to be desired, mostly on maintaining highway speeds. The fix here would be either to purchase a manual or purchase the OV tune with the auto (won't solve everything, but it's close to perfect based on reviews).

Overall (and obviously in my opinion), the third gen OR Taco is a great vehicle that should go the distance in all kinds of conditions on or off pavement.

Edit: OP, if you live where snow/ice occurs in winter, LED headlights are no bueno, as they cannot place heat on the headlight housing to melt off any buildup as you drive. Halogens are much better for true winter conditions and may be something to consider. My .02!
    Cheers!
