Appreciate this, but the problem is not when reversing and the going forward. The problem is when going over or down medium to large speed bumps and driveways.

Bought a 2020 OR last May. I have had this clunk or thud sound on some bumps since new. It kind of sound like the bed is lose and “hopping” but can’t feel any slack in the mounts trying to move by hand. I also have what people describe as the rad mounts squeaking. Just waiting for them to get worse I guess so Toyota can replicate the issues!

Sounds like you’re describing a slightly different noise. My guess is Toyota will say its “normal” too..

I had been chasing a sound like this, that I thought was the bed..found out my passenger rear plastic wheel well shield bangs around when going over bumps. It doesn't have a plastic clip holding it secure like the driver side rear.

Thanks! I will check it out. It was missing or doesn’t have a spot for one?

    It was missing/fell out. :notsure:

Even the side with a clip is kinda loose, I notice the noise the most going over traintracks where I think it just kinda amplifys vibrations coming from the truck.

    Sorry Bud,
I don’t mean to be so negative but that’s how I feel. There is a lot that I love about my Tacoma, but the crap it does that is supposed to be accepted as “normal” baffles me. Look up “brake pad slap”, that’s another one that is normal, but I’ve never heard of it before the Tacoma. Strange

I've been chasing that low-speed-speed-hump front end metal-on-metal noise since day one. I have countless hours under my truck looking and inspecting everything I can get my hands on. I've replaced struts, coils and body mounts and I still have that damn noise.

Interestingly, I have a three neighbors with 2017+ Tacomas. All three trucks make the same noise on the same neighborhood speed humps. My one neighbor went to the extremes of removing the front bumper cover and fenders in an attempt to locate a missing weld(s) or loose bolt(s). No luck on that theory.

Sooner or later, someone will locate the cause of the noise.

Hate to hear you're having the same problem. If you find the cause please let me know.

In the meantime, misery loves company

My new Taco just started clunking from the front driver’s side yesterday when slowly going over bumps.

Is this the noise you folks are hearing?
A quick video of my truck traveling over speed bumps at about 19mph.

    Definitely the front bushings.

I had those replaced and it did not resolve the problem.

I had a set of used fox TRD pro suspension installed in the front and back and i haven’t heard the noise since.

I have exact same noise like in the video. I dont think ill go to the dealer as they will tell me its normal or tell me they can duplicate. I might replace front body mounts with better quality parts and see what happens. I did post a video of my noise a while back.

My 07 ranger did exact same noise for 7 years without any issues.

It is annoying on the truck that i paid 50k though. Its been doing that since brand new. Im really thinking its the front left body mount.

Not the best quality video, but the clunk is at the very end of the video.

    UPDATE!!

The metal on metal sounds coming from the front suspension of my 2017 when traveling over speed humps, the same sound that has bugged the shit out of me since day one, has been completely eliminated. My neighbor runs a video editing company, he allowed me to use some of his more sensitive sound equipment to once again, try to locate the source of the metal on metal sound coming from the front suspension. I attached the sound listening pads to the springs. After about an hour of driving over every speed hump in my hood I was convinced, the coils were the source of the metal on metal sound. To the ear the noise sounds like metal on metal, however, the sound equipment hears and records a noise similar to the cartoon character, The Road Runner, when the bird sticks out his tongue. "Plung, Plung" That "Plung" sound was the coils expanding and contracting.

I was able to locate a gently used set of OEM Hitachi coils overs and struts from a 2020 Tacoma. I removed the suspected bad coils and struts and replaced them with the newly purchased used OEM coils and struts.

I then drove over every speed hump I could find, the result, no metal on metal noise. It has been about 500 miles and since the removal and replacement of the coils and struts and the front suspension is noise free.

Hope this helps anyone else who might have the same issue.

Nobody has mentioned yet, so I'll throw it out there; check torque spec on your LCA/cam bolts. Many times an alignment shop won't get them tight enough. A few uggas and a dugga might get you there, but a torque wrench is super important in this scenario to make sure.

Believe me, those, along with every other bolt was inspected and retorqued and that noise lived on. Those springs were no doubt, the cause of that noise. If something changes, I post the results.

This would indicate that your main shaft of the shock wasn't properly tightened. That has been to cause of suspension noise.

Those springs made that noise when factory new and again with the 5100's. In fact, at about 1,500 the struts were replaced under warranty, the noise went away for a few weeks and returned to the right front first and then to the left front.
