I just bought a 2019 taco double cab. After a month I have 2K miles on it. I can say at this point not a fan of the transmission. It feels like the bucking you get from a manual transmission when you are in too high a gear, but this is an automatic. It happens at or around 5o to 55 MPH when in 6th gear. Traded in my 2010 Tacoma for it, wish the later model stayed with that tranny.

I have a 5K check up and will address this issue. I hope there is a fix because I really don't like the feeling of need to down shift when you can't. I know the 6th gear was added for gas mileage.

I test drove three 19’s and they all seemed fine .... I also test drove a used 2017 pro with like 10k miles that felt like a slug on ice. I was seriously lol’ing at how much gas it took to move it and got a little tightened up first time I pulled out into traffic.

I haven’t tried an ov tuned one to compare but in my brief comparison of the 2017 and 2019 they shifted completely different , in fact I just don’t notice my 2019 shift which is how a transmission should feel on a truck IMO... the engine still has a higher torque band than my old trucks but that’s not a problem and makes traffic easy to modulate in stop and go.

I can confirm ETC mode does eliminate it, It does not go into 6th at 50 MPH. The shift points in cruise are insane, it will hold 4th if it chooses to do so forever.

I have a 2019 TRD Sport with 368 miles on it and I can’t stand the transmission. Constantly hunting for a gear.

2018 here bought in may, build date of March 18 I believe, almost 10k miles, 0 shifting issues. All the complaints you read here are all in peoples head imo. Its an auto trans, of course it's going to shift, that's its job ya sillys

2018 here. Sure it shifts a lot but I think some perception might be vehicle you came from. Sure my Silverado shifted less but it only had 4 gears. Been driving Subaru’s with the cvt that mimics a 6 speed. You don’t hear the engine as much but that tranny varies gears way more than the Tacoma. Guess it does not bother me

    A few.
Has there been a tsb issued for the 2019's for transmission reflash or was the latest one for the 2018 model?

No problems whatsoever with my 2019 Off Road. Smooth as butter. My buddy’s 2016 on the other hand shifts like shit.

According to a Toyota engineer the 2019&2020 got a software update to improve shifting and throttle.

Anyone know if dealers will update 2016-2018 with this new programming?

Mine shifts good for the most part, not the smoothest I’ve felt be sure as hell ain't the worst. I can’t talk much on the matter though because I have a VW GTI that has a dual clutch trans that is inherently rough and jerky at low speeds, so I’m used to it.

I own a 2019, 3.5L, 6AT since a month ago; it was built in December 2018. 2500km + on the clock, so far.
No shifting problem, whatsoever. I had previous experience with a 6AT, 2016 Tacoma, 5AT, 2017 Acura TL,, 5AT, 2002 Acura TL, and so on... So, the comparison in mechanical behavior is easy to make.

Just a few upshifts and downshifts between 6 and 5 overdrives on slight slopes, and a needed downshift to 4 direct drive when I push for it.
Good, as far as I am concerned.

Surprisingly the 2019 feels a bit more soundproofed and soft riding than the 2016. Subtle, but even my wife got the impression... Yet still a good, solid truck ride and handling.

    No complain.

Except having a lead foot, this has been my experience as well. Trans seemed to have sorted out after the first 800 miles or so.

*AUTO TRANSMISSION* I find that if you modulate the throttle down (giving it gas) as the RPMs go up, it shifts solid as it should. If you feather it, it's going to want to shift early. IMO, just slightly change your driving style to accomodate for the "shifting issue". Mine is a 2019 model as well.
