We need someone to video themselves going up incline with cruise and see how long it holds in 6th gear.

For at least the hilly parts of CA, whenever I'm in cruise control, it'll drop down to fourth to maintain the speed and when it starts leveling out, it will shift to 5th and tends to stay there. Once it's been level for a bit, it will then shift to 6th.

Mine is 1.5 months old 19 with 1100 miles on the clock. I have very similar experience. When I towed a 4'x8' uhaul trailer cruise control 78 mph, I noticed it stayed in 5th for most of the time. When going up small hills it would shift to 4th and hold there for rather long time until it's flat for sure. With the trailer, sometimes it hunts between 5th and 6th, but I don't notice unless I stare at the rpm.

The shift is not as quick and smooth as an 8-speed BMW, but much better than the 2014 5.3L 6-speed Silverado I used to drive.

Doesn't seem fixed to me. I bought my 2019 Limited in September; it seems to hunt for gears, sometimes shifts early and also hesitates; then when I push further I get a sudden mild acceleration. Perhaps I did not find the post(s), but I don't see anyone else complaining about 2019's. Am I alone?

I basically just give it slightly more throttle to prevent it from shifting too quickly. Even with this driving style, I'm still averaging 19.2 mpg around town

I have a 2020 with 1500 miles on it. Recently took it on a trip and twice during the trip it seemed to have got stuck in 4th gear while running cruise control at 72 mph. I let it go for about 10 min before I manually changed to 5th gear myself. Is this normal? I took it back to the dealer, there weren’t any codes on the computer. Anyone else have this problem?

Hate to be the party spoiler, but NO it’s not fixed. Sorry, forgot, new member here. 2020 Tacoma 2.7 and yes the transmission acts as it is shifting out of 4th too quick and the truck lugs. Own my own shop and definitely not the transmission slipping, it’s software issue. Problem is, not enough complaints for Toyota to issue a TSB on the 2020’s.

    I had a 2017 a 2018 and now 6000 miles on a 2019.

I either got used to the transmission or it was improved by updates, or the transmission just got used to my driving and self improved.
    My 2019 shifts well.

and yes the truck does learn your driving habits. I tow a lot in my 2019, and now my shifts take longer than usual to shift.

like if I'm driving without a trailer, my shifts are late which makes driving much smoother and makes the truck feel quicker.

My 2019 Toyota Tacoma with 22,xxx miles does exactly what is described here by indowaver ! It can be VERY annoying! I keep hoping for a fix, but so far, the dealer says there is nothing they can do.

It was REALLY bad (like what Riotfunk describes) until the dealership applied an update when it was in for its first oil change.

I only drive it in Etc mode now. I have gotten used to it in that mode but still prefer my First Gen's pedal feel and engine response. Instead of taking the trade in hit and loosing money i just paid it off and live with it. It actually runs pretty good with that little GD button I gotta push all the time.

FWIW the dealer is capable of ECU reprogramming. And they are aware of the 40-50 mph gear hunting, as well as the 1st/2nd gear clunking.

When the TSB didn’t fix the problems for me after giving the truck an entire year to “re-learn”, I was able to convince them to flash the newest software onto my 2017 for $70.

There are apparently two relevant software flashes, the newest versions of which should be:
    896650401400 & 8966304B0400

I found the new software to be quite a bit more of an improvement than the TSB, though the problem still continues to an extent. definitely worth the $70

I don't think we should have to pay Toyota $70 to make their transmission work as it should. But if we must, at least it is only $70.

my 2017 tacoma automatic transmission started shifting really poorly over the weekend. At highway speed's with cruise control it will bounce from 2000rpm to 5000rpm and at low speeds 30 to 45 mph at 2000rpm to 3000rpm it makes a loud ringing noise throughout the whole truck. It has all ways hunted for gears( not like this) had software up dated about a year ago don't think it did anything for the hunting. Any ideas about the new problem?
