Cell phones also don't like salt water. I had mine in my pocket while surf fishing at Ocracoke. Guess what? It'll let you know when it gets into the salt water. It gets REAL HOT ! And then doesn't work any more...

I made 3 spare tailgate keys at Lowe's for my 16 for something like 10 dollars three years ago.

I'm confused, you want a key cheaper than $10 ?

the key is shaped weird. it's flat on both edges yet has the teeth in the center. i never saw a key like that before. i am not too sure home depot or whoever could make it? the dealer can, for 10$. if home depot could, then it would be like 2$ a key i would think.

Some of the bigger Toyota dealers have the lazer machine . My dealer told me he could order me one using my vin , I didn't get a price . That's about all I know .

The tailgate key on my 16 is like a regular car key. Sounds like yours is completely different. My keyfob has a little odd key.

Just purchased a ‘20 Tacoma Off Road and aside from a few annoying things, like automatic transmission, I’m amazed Toyota put a smart switch type ignition in a truck designed to go way off-road! A long way from a Toyota dealer.
Anybody find themselves rolling a window down before walking away from vehicle?
I’d prefer my cars, like airplanes, being capable of doing anything, but not doing anything for you!

    Thanks,
Already missing my simple ‘75 Chevy.
Initially looked for replacement keys... called three dealers and wasn’t impressed with response.
    They seemed clueless:(
I go places I don’t want to hike out of and have zero confidence in truck when locking doors... or them locking themselves, and walking away.
I’d prefer my vehicle to have less college, and a little more high-school :(
Just give a key!... I’ll use it responsibly!

Just so you know the truck will "see" the fob inside and not lock and if you did ,you can just touch the handle and it will open . UNLESS.... you need to put the fob in sleep mode (i do that when i hide it outside)
. Its in the manual how to do it.

OR if you are washing the truck and you don't want the locks to keep going .. open...close...open...when you hit the handle

    Thanks for your reply.
But, I’m “Old School” and perfectly capable of operating a vehicle without help.
    Back to my initial comment...
Why did Toyota install a smart key in a vehicle that’s designed to go way off grid?
I live in the “Stupid State” California and forced to lock doors in a feeble attempt to ward off thieves no matter how far I am from civilization.... thieves work really hard in this State.
Just don’t want to get back to my truck and not be able to unlock door and get it running.
I’ve got enough dead batteries complicating my life :(

Have you looked at the trailer hitch lock boxes? Little lock box hides in trailer hitch, uses a combo to open, can hide a key while you’re away, and is too far for proximity unlock

I’ll look into it... but probably cheaper to hide under rock:(
I never had this issue with ‘75 Chevy :)
    Thanks for you response.

Anybody have luck getting a valet key cut? I have my two hard keys from my two OEM fobs, but I use a smaller aftermarket AJT keyfob w/ no provision to stow the hard key, so the weird little door/tailgate key just sits on the keyring attached to my AJT fob. I don’t like the oddball little OEM fob hardkey and would prefer to just have a standard old school flat key version of it on my keyring.

This thread got me thinking... I never received an actual "valet" key when I bought my Gen 3. I only received 2 electronic FOB keys. My gen 2 came with the 2 FOBs and the extra valet key. I need that valet key for the same reason... surfing.

I ordered a FOB from the dealer but the parts guy ordered the valet key by mistake. He ordered it by VIN. It came from depot or wherever Toyota parts come from, cut and ready to go. Best part is the parts guy gave it to me for free.
