    Lots, straight from the factory.
So I picked up a 2019 SR V6 4x4. No TRD, or anything fancy. I have been reading through this forum a lot over the last couple days and I am starting to have a little buyers remorse or just unsure in my decision.

I’m not a crazy rock crawling, extreme off roader. I want to go out some moderate off-road trails, (Dry Creek Road/Vultee Arch Trail) and places like that.

Is the stock Tacoma 4x4 good to go? Will I need a true LSD or locker differential? Should I have considered the TRD Off Road, even though it was out of my price range?

Just wondering if my truck is good to go, or if I’m about to get hosed on Saturday when I head out off reading.

80% of the people on here will never use their locker, crawl control or 4x4. Get some offroad tires, maybe even a softer offroad suspension without a lift, ie: billstein 5100 or Fox.

    You're gonna be fine lol.

EDIT: To make you feel better, only reason I got a 4x4 TRD sport over a 4x4 SR5 was that I got a tech package over the SR5 for the same price and still came in under 2,000$ grand less than a TRD offroad

Your truck is plenty capable. Go out and have fun. Find out what you need ( probably tires )

Just get some AT tires and you should be good for the normal stuff.

Heck no, you shouldn't have any buyer's remorse. Most who wheel change out the suspension anyway. Lockers? Now you can get front and rear ARB in the future.

But for now, just go out. Moderate off-road trails. 3 or 4 rated, you can do in stock form. Take a shovel. Maxtrax. Or at least a buddy in another vehicle (with recovery rope), and you'll be fine.

You can do a hell of a lot with just 2wd and all-terrain tires. I've only really needed to use my 4wd maybe twice. Unless you're trying to imitate BJ Baldwin and do 80 down a washboard road your stock suspension will be fine lol

Part of the reason I love my SR - I got the 4x4 I wanted but didn't pay for the extras I didn't need. You'll be fine!

No reason at all to have buyers remorse.

Probably the biggest thing that stands out to me is that the OR was out of your price range. Don’t be one of those guys that are house or car poor. It’s not worth it. Most of us learned that the hard way when we were younger.

As far as capabilities, you already answered your own question. You’re not doing anything crazy, 90% of us never will. The guys on the forum that do, are a VERY small percentage of Tacoma owners. There are way more owners then are on this forum.

In time you will see if you need better suspension.

Tires can easily be upgraded now (craigslist the stock ones) or wait until they are worn and just replace with better ones.

Personally I went with an OR because there wasn’t a huge price difference vs an SR 4x4 in my area.

Think of the Tacoma as one of the most modular truck lines out there. If you plan to upgrade a lot of items, go SR so you don’t pay for things you are going to change out anyways. Want it capable without ever really changing anything out; go SR, OR or sport as your needs/preferences dictate.

Enjoy the truck man, all models are amazing platforms!!

If they put a manual 4x4 shifter in the sr5 i am pretty sure they would sell crazy. Just keep the whole thing simple.

I haven't modified mine in the slightest, and I've taken ours up some heinous dirt roads near our cabin in the Sierras.
Compared to previous gen. Tacomas the nose is a bit longer, so I've had to take that into account when pondering my angle of attack.

Well that's comforting to hear! Considering I have an SR5 4x2 DCSB but I do have Nitto RGs (which I believe are AT) because I think the TGs are MT. It's good to know my ride is still pretty capable. My version of off-roading only consists of pulling up to a local fishing pond or down a river through some grass or dirt trails for some mountain biking trails but never any rocks deep back wood stuff.

Toss on some tires and go enjoy your truck, I've had zero issues so far but I'm not rock crawling.

    Here's how this works:
90% of offroad success is due to the driver
10% of offroad success is due to the vehicle.

If you give a shitty driver a nice truck it's not going to help much and there will be failure.
If you give a great driver a Prius to take down a trail then chances are it will get to the end with minimal damage.

My advice is to become a great driver.

Seems odd that the OR was more since they have the same exact MSRP, unless it had extra options over the Sport you purchased.

With same options, Sports were priced about exactly the same as OR in my area. Pros and Cons with both, so decide what you want and get it. I got the OR for the rear locker, but I sure wouldn't mind having a hood scoop, either. :D

Yeah I don't understand why it was, most people say they are the same price, but I saved almost 2,000 Grand. Go figure

You can do plenty with that truck as is especially given the description of your planned off road adventures. Just keep to the more tame trails and you'll be fine. If you find you really like off roading as a sport/hobby some simple upgrades like tires, skid plate (I'd get the skid plate anyway and ditch the air dam) and if you want to go crazy a upgraded suspension and real crazy some air lockers.

I had two 2WD Tacomas in the past and went down unkept dirt roads, over grassy fields and such going to hunting and fishing locations. Never got stuck.

You gotta let the trail remove it. Otherwise leave it on for those sweet, sweet minor mpg gains. (That’s what I do.)
