My 2019 Tacoma 4 Cyl. developed a rattle / brief popping noise on cold starts. Seems worse the longer I go without starting. And it runs perfect after the very brief rattle (2-3 seconds) goes away. Doesn’t do it every morning either. To rule things out, I recently replaced my tensioner and serpentine belt to get rid of another noise I had. Thought they were connected. But the short rattle on cold start is still there. Any ideas??

What brand oil filter you using? Sounds like the anti-drain back valve has gone bad. Timing chain tensioner's operate on oil pressure so for that split second on cold start you have some slack in the chain causing the rattle.

I have my oil changed at Valvoline. Bought the truck with 50,000 miles. Changed at Valvoline since. Now has 67,000 miles. Could it be that simple? Either non Synthetic oil or a non Toyota filter? Not sure, would have to see what they are putting in it

If I take it to Toyota for my oil change, (confirming recommended filter and oil) would that possibly fix my issue?

To confirm, they are putting Valvoline 0W20 MaxLife Synthetic Blend and a Valvoline V0-25 filter.

Could this be my issue? Not 100% synthetic, and a non Toyota filter? Thanks!!!

At dealer now. They don’t find anything. So, putting on Toyota OEM oil filter and factory synthetic oil. Fingers crossed. Thanks!!

Welcome to the forum :hattip:Hope this fixes the issue.

Quick lube places tend to have "basic" grade oil filters.
OEM filters are always a good safe choice.

Any brand oil that meets Toyota specifications is fine.
That said, the Toyota oil is a high quality product.

Doesn’t tensioner have a ratcheting mechanism to keep the plunger from compressing?

I have a 05 Tundra with the 4.0 1GR-FE. I don’t drive everyday but when it sits for a few days it will make a little noise when starting cold. That engine uses buckets. My 3rd Gen will make a similar noise if it sits for a few days cold.

    Update:

i caught the noise for y’all to listen and give me opinions. It’s odd how quick it starts and stops.

    https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=omdVetV1nYs&feature=share

Also, I had the dealer change my oil to full synthetic and a OEM Toyota oil filter. Still the noise, randomly on cold starts. Just changed my 2 idler pulleys just to cross that off my list. No noise since that, but sometimes it doesn’t make the noise for a week.

Any help is greatly appreciated, since Toyota doesn’t even really want to help.

Its not the filter...because the filter sits upright...and doesn't even need an anti-drain valve being in that position.

So, is this normal? It’s hasn’t done it any other times of colder temperatures. Just started first time, a month ago. Last 2 winters, started perfectly quiet

It doesn't normal nor like a "rattle". It sounds more like noise caused by friction or mechanical interference while something is rotating. But you know... mystery noises. These threads rarely end with a resolution. Someone skilled needs to get under the hood and investigate.

I can also add that my truck makes a terrible screeching noise when started below 0F, but I think it is simply a belt slipping. It ends after 1-2s and I've never really worried about it. To be clear, it's completely different than the noise in your video.

Been looking and listening to posts about VVTI Cam gears. The noise sounds almost exact to my issue. Any thoughts?

Replaced both idlers. No noise for 4 weeks. Thought l got lucky. Then today, it’s back. Guess I gotta drive it till it’s making the noise, for diagnosis. Who knows???

It almost sounds like the starter is trying to re-engage again. I don’t know, strange noise there. Need someone to listen around the engine bay when that is happening.
Not sure what you mean, the filter isn’t upright it’s closed end of the filter can down.

I haven't had any unusual noises from my 3rd gen after it sits a couple days. This 3.5 is pretty good except for more mechanical sounds in the engine compartment when running, then my old 4.7 tundra made. That 4.7 would groan if i started it in temps below zero. I will say that 4.7 v8 was one sweet engine.

Ok. Still very random and even seemed much better and further apart until this morning. Not cold (50 degrees). Last week I Changed my VVT oil solenoid / control valves as a last ditch effort and also switched to a “Tacoma oil forum” recommended Mobil 1 Extended Performance along with staying with the OEM Toyota filter. One week after, I get this same rattle, but it doesn’t fade and go away on its own. I simply turned off the key. Then restarted with ZERO noise. Which now makes me wonder if something is sticking, hanging up, possible starter solenoid hanging, or the pin in the VVT finally sticking?? Is it my oil change, I’m still with 0W20 full synthetic?? I still think it sounds in the top end. But this is the first time that it seemed that it would not stop on its own. It stayed solid until I turned the key off. Then not a peep on an immediate re-start. Any other advice? TIA

I have a 2020 Tacoma sr5 4 cylinder that has been doing the same thing. Toyota said I was using an after market oil filter so they replaced it. And it continued. Every morning first start it happens. My check engine light came on and they replaced my camshaft. Saying that was the issue. Continues to happen. They now told me that they need to get a Toyota engineer involved because they can’t figure it out. My truck has been with them for 2 weeks with no updates. If anyone can help that would be great. Been happening since 65,000-96,000 miles. It’s hard to leave my truck with them because they can’t give me a rental till they have a diagnosis. I have taken videos for them of the noise.
