    Hello all,

First time Tacoma owner, but still have my 2010 FJ. I was mesmerized when I drove 300 miles to get my Tacoma SR with SX package, but it did not have a key fob. Even the dealer near me didn’t realize they made standard keys without an unlock/lock button on it. Even my 2010 FJ has one. I traveled too far not to get the color I wanted so I’m looking now for options. I do have automatic locks and windows.

    - Does anyone know if you can order a blank with the fob built in it and it can be programmed?

I am getting a 12v solutions remote start (hate that you have to tap into TPMS), but they were amazing answering all the questions I had. I would like to eliminate having to order their long range remote too if I can find a key blank with the lock/unlock right on it that can be programmed.

    Thanks!

Thank you. I called Toyota and they had no clue about doing it. I’m going to call another dealer and a locksmith today. I also did a search on these boards and all I could come up with is people wanting the inexpensive “H” key for spares. I want the actual lock/unlock on mine.

    Thanks!

If you need a key, I have three left for sale. I'm not sure on the SR models, but this is the same blank new key the dealers have for a fraction of the cost. Also, you can program these at the dealer or your locksmith or yourself.

I know the convenience package comes with key less entry.. Not sure a truck that doesnt come with it, is as easy as just programming a fob.. But I have no clue so take that FWIW

I would buy these in a heartbeat but I can’t get a dealer to tell me if they will work or not. One dealer said yes, one said no, one said they didn’t know. Toyota said they can’t give any recommendations.

Apparently it did NOT come with the convenience package, but I would think I could get the H key you have and then just get it programmed. Unless with the “convenience” package there was some kind of different module or something in the ignition.

I’m at a loss here. I think I’m just going to have to try it.

I assume that the truck's ECU would have to be set up for this and the wiring, etc already there...??:confused:

I have a local locksmith that did some research for me. He has those H keys with the lock/unlock built in like the link above. He’s going to give it a shot tomorrow or next week to see if it takes.

I guess worst case I get the fob as well from 12V solutions.

What a nightmare. Why they would even make them like this anymore is beyond me...

Not to offend you but this is part of buying a lower model (even though there is nothing wrong with the truck, it has less features than the TRD models for instance). There are things lost and gained as you move up and down in trims.

Also, you can’t compare to the FJ because this isn’t the upgraded model of the Tacoma. The FJ had its own features and the Tacoma has its features. As far as IF it should be available in 2019 for Christ’s sake? Yes I do agree with you.

I will say though, there are some advantages to having a keyed ignition. You will see as you navigate these threads that issues have arisen for some with push button start models. All manuals have a physical key which I prefer. Hope it all works out and the key fob can be programmed.

No offense whatsoever. I actually traveled 300 miles to get the SR with the SX package in the color I wanted. I looked for 6 months for a used Tacoma to replace my “beater” truck. When I saw they were selling for damn near as much as new ones, I finally pulled the trigger.

My $10-15k beater search turned into a $27k Tacoma. I am more than happy as I wanted one forever! My dad had one in the 80’s when I was a kid, and I’ve wanted one ever since. I love my FJ but it’s all lifted and done up. To find the Tacoma SR with SX and 4 cyl engine was a hard search.

I just never knew they made them anymore without the fobs. Manually locking and unlocking a door.....sucks!

Even manuals are getting pretty hard to come by these days also. Glad you got a truck you like for sure! Enjoy it and hopefully you can get the lock thing figured out. Keep us posted.
