My truck has 22,000 miles, has always had this problem. If go up a small hill it will down shift which is normal but l go from 1800 rpm to over 3000 rpm sounds like motor is coming out of truck, l am getting tired of it. l am taking it in to dealer tomorrow morning any recall bulletins on it anybody knows off, l had a 2012 had no problems with it I'm about ready to trade it off.

It's programmed to satisfy the government standards, which in turn means something has to suffer. Comparing a 2012 to a 2019 is a huge difference.
Drop it in S4 and roll on, and hit that ECT button at every start up.

AT shifts to the gear needed to obtain the correct RPM needed for the requested amount of power.
Only posts complaining about the same thing.

Why do you think my username is what it is (the trans code for autotragic tacomas are AC60F's). I ended up selling my truck, but not due to the transmission as i ended up getting used to it and just being okay with it and i just ignored the incessant gear hunting it does. I kinda miss the truck now and ill probably get another in the future but in manual trans. I dont think you should sell/trade your truck unless its really killing you. 3rd gen tacomas are geared towards mpgs and thats why they have such little low end power and are always hunting for gears. good luck with your decision.

Nah he is saying he DOESN'T want the motor to rev high. ECT would make it worse. He wants to stay in the same gear or downshift only one gear to accelerate up a hill at a low rpm, instead of it downshifting multiple gears and revving high. Only solution is to trade up to something with more low end torque, like a diesel.

There's a shortage of Tacoma's, no excuses, now's the time, no need to waste another
two years of your life barkin' about engine speed, and noise.

Man if I had a nickel for every person who bitched about the gears hunting on their Taco I could buy a friggen new one. What idiot drops $40,000 on a vehicle without driving that thing in multiple scenarios to get a feel for how it drives. Apparently god stopped handing out common sense around 1970.

When I go up a small hill I have to shift to the next lower gear. And if that doesn’t work then I shift to the next lower gear. And if that doesn’t work then I shift to the next lowest gear and what ya know, there’s two burning tire tracks and when I hit 88 it goes back to the future.

Unfortunately this appears to be normal. When I'm going up a moderate hill say on the highway, I'd understand if the truck downshifted one gear from 6 to 5 to help maintain speed, but more often than not, it shifts two gears like from 6 to 4, and the RPMs go way up.

There are some TSBs out there for the transmission that may help a little but it probably won't do a ton.
