2019 Tacoma Transmission Isssues

Hi:

Have been having Transmission issues since I purchased the Tacoma new in 2019.

Is anyone else have the same Transmission issue?

Having the truck serviced again, can someone tell me the technical description I can give to the mechanic so they know what to look for?

That weird downshift seems like maybe a programming issue to me, not sure about the noise.

Will pass your DownShift Programming idea to the service technician when I drop off the vehicle for maintenance.


The noise sounds more like rubber sliding not a metal type noise to me, only happens on sweeping left hand turns when in motion, does not happen when making a sweeping left turn from a stopped position.

How can it be a transmission noise if this happens during a sweeping left hand turn and not a sweeping right hand turn? If power leaves the transmission through the rear drive shaft and into the rear differential a sweeping left hand turn will have no effect.
If this truck is a 4x4 then the problem can be with the front drive shaft, front differential, front axle, front CV joint, front wheel bearing.

I am confused a bit here.

Believe the Downshifting is a transmission issue.


The noise when making a sweeping left turn is from an unknown source, sorry for not being clearer.

 

I had to watch his video three times but there seems to be an issue with the speed of the truck when he crests the hill .
He is doing 43-45 mph . The converter is locked and the engine is up to temp as he slowly gains speed up the hill .
He is in that speed zone where the converter likes to lock and unlock as he crests the hill , Once he gets over the hill , he taps the brakes with zero throttle which commands the converter to turn off . The transmission thinks he is planning to come to a stop so the transmission commands a downshift from third to second gear . Keep in mind he doesnt have his foot on the gas after he crest the hill but he taps the brakes
The noise turning left sounds like a loose cab mount . Dont think the sound he is hearing has anything to do with the transmission .

If this is happening on all hills , yes there is a downshift issue and possibly a programming problem as mentioned above .
If its only happening on this part of your drive every day , I think its just the way the truck functions at zero throttle with the converter locked .The transmission is confused because you are doing 43 mph with zero throttle . Transmission are programmed to anticipate your next move . In the circumstances I witnessed in the video , the transmission assumed you were going to come to a stop .
I highly suggest taking a dealer technician for a ride in an attempt to reproduce the identical scenario for more clarity

With only 13k for mileage , the adaptive learning thats built into the transmission programming is still adjusting to the driver .
Try having the dealer clear your adaptive learning ,then drive with a heavier foot for a while to see if the problem reoccurs

To answer Gearcrunker after his detailed informative post, the video shows a daily/repeatable issue but the issue happens on different hills, at different speeds, and under different conditions.


I had Toyota service the vehicle yesterday. I provided them with all of the information from this thread, Thank You.


They were unable to reproduce / locate / correct the sweeping left turn noise. Will have my regular mechanic check the cab mounts as Gearcruncher suggests, only saw his post after I dropped off the truck for service.


For the Transmission issue, they applied software update:TSB-0092-20. Toyota claims that they will not know if this will correct the issue until I have driven 100 miles.


Will update this tread once I have 100 miles driven.
