My 2019 Taco is making clicking, and sometimes grinding noises, when initially cranked. The battery is pushing 12.4v and the Toyo dealership checked it and the wiring and didn't find any issues. They weren't able to recreate the sound in these videos and therefore couldn't diagnose the issue. I sent them a handful of videos and they still couldn't offer any suggestions, but to bring it back in. The sounds in these clips is pretty mild compared to the other previous clicking/grinding noises on start up. It happens intermittently, sometimes in the morning/sometimes not, sometimes after work/sometimes not.

Has anyone else had cranking issues? Ideas about origins for these sounds? Any diagnostics I should insist on them running at dealership? Last time they offered that the head unit update may have solved the problem...that seemed like quite a reach. Thanks in advance!

I have the same exact truck (actually same color) but I now have 74,000 miles and haven’t heard that noise. Sorry I couldn’t help you out. Good luck my friend.

That's what I thought too. I sent the clip to a mechanic and he said the same thing. The toyo dealership in Austin apparently can't diagnose it if they can't reproduce the sound and had zero interest in the clips I sent them.

Sounds like the starter engaging and disengaging. Maybe loose connections somewhere, solenoid starting to go out etc.
    Been under water recently?

Thanks for all the feedback, yall!

I’m not sure if they load tested battery, but that would definitely need to happen.

It has not been underwater lately, or in the past year.
