Based on above, I guess it is the shift points that causes a "lag in the performance". Understand that it can occur when you accelerate....would hate to get in the middle of an intersection and it stall or hesitate. I have been thinking of trading "my completely outstanding" 2015 V6 TRD for a new one, but think I will wait tile 2019 so see if any further "fixes" are implemented by Toyota. Sounds like a simple programming issue to me. Wonder if any aftermarket chip might fix the problem on the current models? Still really like the styling on the new trucks.

I'm going to argue with you my friend.

We re-did our kitchen 6 years ago. We spent over 10K in new appliances based on CR recommendations.

6 years later we replaced every single appliance.....

    Why?

    Just to stimulate the economy?

I could do the same. But much rather spend on other things.

Why don't you go test drive a new truck, you may or may not like how it drives and then you can decide if you want to replace your pristine 2015.

I'd just keep the 2015. That's not old enough by any means to get rid of. That said, my 2018 shifts fine. The only thing it does is in certain terrain it up shifts sooner than it should. 99% of the other times, it shifts normally. It's plenty quick off the line and passing. I'd still like to have the tranny fluid checked for peace of mind though.

Based on feedback so far, it appears the issue is with the programmed shift points on the transmission that are designed to improve fuel economy. The V6 engine and transmission on my 2015 Tacoma TRD shifts smoothly at all times and engine sings like a bird. Mileage is not great but its a truck with a good towing capacity, plenty of passing power, a superior reliability. May just keep it and wait for Toyota to re-flash the programming on future Tacomas before I consider buying a new one.

We do have the option of buying a different truck and then we can fix a truck instead of a transmission.

Test drive it. If YOU like the transmission, there is no problem

You are right about the 2015 Tacoma V6 TRD. It is absolutely perfect and I have no problems with it in any way, other than I really need a long bed for work purposes. I naively thought the 2018 Tacoma would be similarly perfect, and since resale value is so high on the 2015, I would just trade up and get the 2018 V6 TRD 4x4 long bed. Now having second thoughts after reading all the posts. When I called the local dealer about the transmission issues, he said "that is the way it is"......no fixes or re-engineering has been implemented as yet. Maybe 2019? I think I will hold on to my 2015 Tacoma TRD as it is a real winner and wait for a similarly perfect truck to be produced in the future by Toyota.

I agree with the general consensus here that the "problems" have been exaggerated here on TW. My 18 drives fine no issues what-so-ever. Does the transmission hesitate -not really any more than any other AT would as it "figures" out what to do. I know the 15 is a solid truck so if you're happy why buy a new one? But if your like me and appreciate an upgraded interior then it could be worth the extra $$$ especially considering there will be more used 3rd gens out there next year to compete against yours when you go to sell/trade. 18 got the new TSS so I doubt much if any will change for 19. My $.02

Why ask here and why call the dealer and ask? Go test drive one and see if YOU like it, complaining about something you have not even driven is a waste of time.

Salesmen can be intimidating to some, just saying...

You may have to wait a while for that. A good long while....

    Behold, perfection is fleeting!

I have the perfect truck, a ’16 V-6 auto no transmission issues 36+k miles on the clock, and no tune. Imagine that!

I’ve never even bothered to check the ATF level on this truck, or any of the A/T tsb upgrades. All this while the forum was all up in arms in hysteria on how adding atf fluid was the cure all for all the (non existing) problems. That didn’t workout too well for most though.

Every major change in new tech or operator execution comes with issues for some.

Now I’m going way back for an example about change, like when the troublesome hand operated choke cable (would break or hang up) so it got replaced by the better flawless automatic choke, and some ppl had big issues getting the vehicle to start or it to work.

That is until they learned that you had to press the accelerator pedal all the way to the floor, and guess what, it worked!

After many years of heartache, just about everyone had that procedure down pat, all seem well in motor city. Now soon after, the electronic fuel injection replaced it to alleviate all those issues. But the old operating procedure was no longer required.
However, that may have created new issues for those that continued to press the accelerator all the way to the floor before starting. GRRRrrr!

IDK if anyone did a mass action lawsuit against automakers for faulty auto chokes or fuel injection issues back then, but it seems ppl handled issues differently. They didn’t reach for a gun at the first sign of trouble either, they punched, learned, adopted and moved on.

No internet, forums or social media back then to trash a product or person. No other recourse but to learn or move on. Imagine that!

Oh well, the new world order now seems to live, learn, shoot or trash badly or try to sell you a new (more troublesome) product to cure the ailment they try to put in your mind.

    Live and learn

    Cheers!

I have owned 7 different Toyota trucks (Tacomas and Tundras) and a few 4runners as well....I'm a LONG time fan of Toyota trucks. I never owned a 2nd gen Tacoma cause I couldn't stand the interiors...though they drove well. Personally, I would not trade a 2015 Tacoma in on a 3rd Gen. The ideal situation would be a 2nd Gen motor/trans in a 3rd Gen because everything about the 3rd gen is better except the eng/trans combo (IMHO, not trying to start a debate with anyone...for those who love it as is, I'm happy for you.) I absolutely hated the way mine drove after owning it a week. I purchased the OVtune and it's GREATLY improved, but I am still not ecstatic with it. I would not tell you it's junk (like some) or that it's great (like others), the best advice I can give you is find a dealer who will let you take one overnight if possible and drive the hell out of it in every possible situation (especially hilly areas and highway work using cruise control) before you put down your hard earned cash. If I had an extended test drive when I bought mine (instead of the shortish in town test drive and just trusting Toyota trucks), I probably would have bought a Tundra and been much happier. Don't listen to my opinion of my truck or anyone else's opinion on their truck....take a LONG test drive and see if it suits you. Good luck.

Transmission is programmed for fuel economy. Combined with the new smaller engine it manages to get very good fuel econ. I can hit 26 mpg on the highway with ease. The drawback is that it behaves much differently than previous gen Tacoma in day to day driving. As you can see some people hate it and it doesn't bother some at all. All these trucks are the same off the factory floor, so when some say they have no issues, it just means it doesn't bother them they way truck always shifts and gets to over drive gears asap.

I know it's a long shot, but renting one for a few days or borrowing one from someone for a few days of driving is the only way you will know if you're ok with it.
