I own a 2017 TRD and previously owned 2007 TRD, which I really loved. IMO the 3rd gens are fine trucks but the driving experience is substantially different. At first it was somewhat of a struggle to get used to driving the 2017 and I started buying into all the negativity posted here and on other sites. But there were a few posters here who had owned 2nd gen models who suggested we had to learn how to drive the new models differently, a suggestion I took to heart. I'm glad I did because now I thoroughly enjoy driving my truck again and am also liking the improved gas mileage I am getting in my day to day driving. There's really no question about the off-road capabilities of the 3rd gen as I've tested it at length among the White Mountains and the The National Seashore on Cape Cod (what's still available), where it exceeds the highest expectations. At this point, the only time I'm still a bit disappointing is when I tow my 4,200# travel trailer. I feel the 2nd gen did a better job at that even the the 3rd gen trucks have a higher tow haul capacity. But for the 4 or 5 times I pull the trailer every year I managed to comes to terms with the trade off. For a truck that size it does an awful lot, pretty well. In a category that only gives a few other options (Colorado, Frontier) its still the best option.

Thanks to everyone for their input. Remember, I believe my 2015 Tacoma 4D, TRD V6 Auto is the benchmark for me and it is mechanically fantastic. I may keep it forever, but just had this wild ass idea that, since I really wanted the long bed version and like the styling and options of the new 3rd generation, perhaps a purchase of a 2018 or 19 model may be in my future.
It was then advised by CR and the local dealer about the "3rd Gen drive ability complaints with shifting" (there are no such issues with my 2015). Apparently, some people hate it, some live with it, and some love it. I will contact the dealer (as suggested) and see if I can drive one for a few days to draw my own conclusions. As for me, I am not quite ready to "trade off drive ability for better gas mileage and pretty styling" right yet, but am still open to the possibility after a more "hands on" evaluation. Stand by.....:stayontopic:

I had someone bring that up at work when I started talking about wanting a new Tacoma, well you can get X for the same price.

    I don't want truck brand x

I do wish Toyota would get their shit together and ditch the rear drums

Just curious so don't take this the wrong way, but have you been in a situation where it would actually make a difference if you had rear disc instead of drums? I am not trying to start a shitstrom here, I am genuinely asking for myself (no friends involved). My truck has rear drum and our car has rear disc and with everyday driving I really can't tell a difference. My old cruiser had drum on the rear, my new crotch rocket has disc front and back, I can't feel a difference there either.

The Orange Virus tune will negate any shifting issues that
These drums stop better than the discs I had on a 2008 Jetta.

When every competitor is using discs it's time to step it up. They're easier to service. They're easier to inspect. They look cooler. If the rear axle seal fails you don't end up with a friction surface totally coated in oil.

On my 3rd Tacoma. Have never had an issue with rear drums. Brakes work as intended and don't get rocks stuck in them which is nice

There's actually a tsb for the transmission problems just dropped last week. Couple guys been chatting about it on the tuning torms apparently it's a huge improvement over stock.

On the up side I heard alot of guys with the 18's say they don't have any issues. I did but they're definitely fixes for it now that didn't exist two years ago.

I love my 17 since I got it tuned, it still doesn't have the torque of the 4.0l but holy it's like a scalded cat when you step on it.

Toyota's selling 20,000+ a month right now so can't be that bad right? And most people who have problems would end up... Here...? Everyone else is just nodding along happy on their new tacos.

Just know if you do decide to jump on it there are fixes out there. Tuning it is like 700$+ but vastly improved my driving experience.

    Good luck man.

I put 80K miles on my ‘16 TRD OR auto. It was an odd shifting bugger until I put the shift sense pro thing in, that fixed it. That being said, I sold that truck and got an ‘18 Pro with a manual. I’m happy to be back rowing my own gears.

The info in the TCU and ECU is no different from 17-18 with the exception of the SSP meshing. There's no reason mechanically why it shouldn't apply to the 18 as well. Even if it doesn't right now.

Agreed. In fact I didn’t even know or notice until I took delivery and still so t care. Tacoma’s are Tacoma’s, they’ve been on the road before disc brakes, and will still continue to do so. Two in the front, baby steps I guess but doesn’t bother me!

I haven't had any issues with my '18, just lovin it everyday. The auto tranny is flawless as is the engine and everything else on the truck! No complaints here, but I do wonder about the rear drums.:D
