Took my Tacoma to Toyota dealership due to unacceptable vibration/shaking when idling.
Vibration happens when truck is in gear and stopped, like at long traffic signal. Vibration starts after about 5-8 seconds after stopping and gets progressive worst the longer stopped. This happens each time while stopped with truck in gear. Does not seem to happen when engine is cold. Tacoma has 1680 miles. Dealership test drove and checked with computer. They did feel the vibration. There determination this is normal and all the Tocamas do this.

I would like to here from other 3rd generation owners to see if you are experiencing the vibration.

Mine had the same vibration/shaking, it takes about 4,000 to 5,000 miles and it goes away, and the MPG improves drastically.

@Cconrad , is it possibly just idling a few hundred RPM too slowly after reaching operating temp? Try putting very light pressure on the accelerator pedal while stopped at a light and see if it goes away.

If it is too low and you want to try to increase it, here is a quick method that might work.

No idea if this works on 3rd Gen, but you can re-calibrate the idle speed on some Toyota models by the following procedure: reach full operating temp; shut the vehicle off; set the parking brake; cycle the key to On twice, without starting; one the 3rd cycle, start the engine; confirm all Accesories are off; put the trans in Drive; remove foot from brake; let the vehicle sit without touching accel or brake pedal; in 2-3 mins the idle speed will increase (or decrease) to what should be the correct level.

Usually this occurs after battery disconnect and will self correct over time, but how long,... Mine had just dropped ever lower over time and was not self correcting.

It woks on my Camry V6. Took about 1-2 mins to increase from about 300-350 to what felt perfect about 6-700 rpm.

Low RPM vibrations could be just a harmonic vibration between the engine and the torque converter, and everything else that is being powered by it, causing the engine to rock on its mounts. Does it stop when you slightly change RPM?

The vibration that you describe seems like a symptom of bad motor mounts, but I don't really know nothing anyway.
    Good luck!

Yes, the vibration does diminish when RPM's increase to around 750. When the tech check the idle speed it was 560 when the vibration occurs.

Slowboater, I was also told it is normal. I just can not except that Toyota designed a truck to vibrate at idle. I am trying to get a regional technician to take at look at mine. Have a case opened and awaiting a response. Should hear back Tuesday Dec. 17.

Idle RPM sounds way too low to me.
IIRC, 750 is the minimum idle RPM; and that's on a warm engine. The engine is considered started at 400 RPM.

I even had an independent mechanic take a look at it. He told me it's a little 'rough' but nothing to worry about.

560 rpm is normal at idling in the gear. My truck idles around this number, no vibrations though.

Took my Tacoma to the dealership yesterday to meet with the regional tech. Did lots of test and comparison with another new Tacoma. Worked on it from 8:00 am until 5:00 pm. Determined both did vibrate but mine did vibrate somewhat more. They loosened the body mounts, transmission mount and the motor mounts and the vibration went away. Tightened the body and transmission mounts and the vibration did not return. Tightened the motor mounts and it returned. Today they are replacing the motor mounts to see if it helps. We'll see.

Picked up the Tacoma today. After replacing the motor mounts the seismic meter the tech was using showed about 1/2 the vibration. The tech confirms there is still vibration and said that the amount of remaining vibration is "NORMAL". Don't know that I can tell a lot of difference, however I have not driven it much, just from the dealership home. I will say the tech did a lot of analysis and he will send it to the engineers for the Tacoma. Maybe it will help with future Tacomas. Not sure if I will pursue it more, guess I'll have to learn to live with the vibration.

Thanks for all the replies. Merry Christmas to ALL.

    A few.
Mine did it when I first got it. It went away after a short while.

Both my second gen and my third gen both vibrate a little bit when at idle. My friend had a second gen, did not vibrate, then he bought a third gen, did not vibrate. But I am a bit unlucky but its not bad enough for me to worry about, I'm hoping it goes away over time. When I sold my second gen, the new owner did not think it was a problem worth worrying about.

Dood hasn't returned since, just another new TW poster that takes his new Toyota to the dealer to demand an
"unacceptable" vibration, noise, etc be fixed, and never return here to explain the outcome.
