So I just bought my Off Road last week. The only real hesitation I had before buying it was concern about the shifting.

I have a really good friend who’s Taco is three years older. We do everything together and are always out hunting and traipsing all over God’s creation in it. The truck really impressed me with its off road capability, but the one thing that really left me cold was the way it shifted. Even from the passenger seat I would notice it especially on the highway.

Fast forward to when Imtook my 2019 out for a test drive, and I mentioned all this to the salesman who told me to take it out on the highway and go to town. I was shocked when the truck ran as smooth as a baby’s ass. I took that truck home with me, it doesn’t shift weird at all.

I guess I’m taking the long road around to ask, did Toyota address this issue with the 2019’s? My truck is like night and day compared to my buddy’s when it comes to shifting.

Here’s a gratuitous pic after just over a week of ownership. Having more fun with this truck than a kid with a new toy!

I'm guessing TSB 0052-18 or TSB 0062-18 software was applied to late 2018s and all 2019s from the factory. Just a guess.

I never had the power surge or lack of power, and City driving was fine for me. TSB 0052-18 fixed most of the 4-5-6 dance and it improved acceleration a bit too.

I bought my 2018 in May.

You really don’t need to “guess” if the TSB has been incorporated on your vehicle, there will be a label under your hood if one has been applied. My 2018, made 08/2018 did NOT incorporate the transmission TSB... I verified by reading ECU info.

I’ve been wondering the same thing. I picked up an 19 TRD OR just a couple weeks ago and haven’t particularly noticed any funny shifting on the highway.

I was thinking about, and probably still will, asking the dealer to make sure my tranny software is up to date when I have it serviced for the first time, but hopefully it already is.

Count me as another with a 2019 who hasn’t noticed a stumble but now I have to go and check for sticker under the hood.

My July 2018 build has no shifting issues. So smooth that sometimes I have to look at the tach to see it shift. Trailering at 70 (3500 #) and pulling a steep hill you feel it and it hear it shift from S4 TO 3. No different than my Gen3 4.0L

The sticker won't be there if the tsb came out in the 2018 run. It would already be done.

My 2018 built in August does not have any shifting issues. I do use S4 in the city where max speed is 45, but on the highway I have no problems.

OK dump question then, once a TSB comes out do all trucks produced after the TSB date include the newest updates?

My truck shifts a little more than I'm used to. But then again I didn't notice it until I became a member here, so you know... Its probably fine.

Not sure about toyota. But typically a tsb wouldn't be released until the fix is made in production. You wouldn't keep pumping out vehicles that required you to reimburse service departments for updates if you had the fix sitting on the shelf.

I have a 2019 OR built in December 2018 and haven't noticed any issues whatsoever. The transmission acts totally normal under all conditions so far, it is smooth as whipped butter. There's plenty of power when you really get on it. The truck actually has surprised the hell out of me with how quiet it is too - maybe it's because 90% of the exhaust had rotted off my old 2500HD or because I'm losing my hearing (possibly related), but the ride is super smooth and nearly silent with the stereo/fan turned way down. I'm guessing whatever issues existed may have been fixed at the factory in the last few months.

If it became standard software after a certain production date on 2018s and/or 2019s, then it would not longer be a TSB... It would just be standard software and there wouldn't be a sticker from the factory.

Folks, this TSB has been out for all 3rd gen model years, and has NOT been adapted for production... see if you can find the TSB applicable to 2019 ECU codes... you should check your ECU ID to verify, that’s the only true method to determine if a TSB has been flashed. I can tell you my ID 04A60 and that is stock 2018 Limited V6 produced 08/2018. I don’t have the info for 2019, but below is for 2018 and my truck:

Stickers won't be present on any vehicle that received the flashed ECUs from the factory. Stickers are only there for emissions compliance with configurations that deviate from the OEM configuration.

It's a little complicated but the baseline is a rolling release. Each model year gets its own ECM ID when it's released and typically, newer model years will have the flashes rolled up into the OEM config. The 2019 trucks won't match the 2016-2018 trucks until some new issue arises that requires a reflash and they all need to be repaired to the same new baseline then the 2020 trucks will have a different ID that also includes the new program. This basically means the 2016-2018 and 2019 may have an identical program under the hood with a different ID for the flash.

So you’re saying the 2019’s have this TSB imbedded into the ECU at build time... please provide collaborative evidence. If true, will be very interesting reaction by Tacoma owners... as Toyota would be admitting product wide failure and should issue a recall vs a TSB.

OP et.al., should check out this thread... evidently the 2019’s suffer from the same transmission issue, and the dealers are applying the same, if not similar TSB, fix... note post numbers #8, #9, #13, #15, #16, #18, #19... so much misinformation and “assumptions” around here (everyone is an expert).
