Having my transmission replaced this week under warranty.

question I have is regarding the ECU TSB flash update I’ve read about for these 3rd gen’s. I guess it’s supposed to update the shift points of the transmission?

Is this update something that will automatically happen with a new transmission install? Or should I ask the dealer directly for this update?

Can you elaborate on the details of why your vehicle needs a new transmission? Are you wanting to know about an actual Toyota TSB or one of the after market tunes that alters the shift points?

I have a rotational sound and vibration coming from the drive train somewhere. The dealer first diagnosed the drive shaft assembly, so they changed that under warranty. But the sound was still there. They then used “chassis ears” to find the problem and they said it needs a transmission. No further explanation other than they “don’t disassemble transmissions” and since I have the warranty they elected to replace the whole transmission.

I know that these 3rd gen’s are notorious for poor shift points so I was wondering if a transmission replacement will automatically warrant a ECU update or will I even need it.

    this is the TSB =

Dealer will have to connect to ecu/tcu to perform learning values reset. Remind them to check the calibration ID and update if old.

Wouldn’t hurt to remind them or ask about it if they’re replacing the transmission

I just dropped off the truck to the dealer. The service advisor said updating the ECU isn’t part of the mechanical repair (transmission replacement) and not covered under warranty, since I’m beyond 80k miles. But he said he was going to submit a request for to be updated.

likely not unless you can show it's needed.

They won't do it, and even if they did it won't change anything. Get an OTT tune and be done with it

Don’t hear of too many AT failures on the 3rd gens. These AT’s are quite solid despite their programming leading to the odd shifting and complaints.

Hopefully the new transmission fixes your problem. As mentioned, see how you like the transmission replacement then consider the OTT tune.

Isn't the ECU (the Electronic Control Unit) like the electronic brain of the truck? I don't know. If it is would not it control any transmission in the truck the same way?

OTT tune is for sure on my radar, but I'll check into that once this warranty expires - 20k more miles to go.

I believe you are correct. I was just wondering if they update that automatically because a new unit is being installed. Anyway, they are checking on that now as they do the work. Hope to have the truck back later today or by tomorrow.

Apparently there is a ECU and TCU. The engine and transmission have a meeting when you press down on the gas pedal. Toyota calls this “Force Value”. Computers try and get the best of everything to maximize emissions and MPG’s at the expense of performance.
