Approximately 100 miles towing at around 60mph. The rest unladen on country roads.

For the OP — but more likely those newcomers that might read this thread — read up on this and other forums about how to maximize fuel economy. It’s not rocket science. Accelerate slowly, glide to lights instead of racing to them, and brake early and glide instead of waiting and then hard braking, etc., etc., etc. it’s less “fun” but more “zen.” Don’t do 80 on the freeway — the factory rating is for lower highway speeds. And, for what it’s worth:

My fuelly average is ~23mpg over the life of the truck thus far, and I drive 50/50 city/hwy in SoCal.

    Yup.

So pretty much don't drive like 99% of LA drivers if you want to get rated MPG lol

Don't all these mpgs fly out the window once the A/C is turned on?

Fuel economy is the responsibility of the driver. It always has been, and always will be, in any vehicle ever made. This knowledge seems to have been lost so I will say it again: fuel economy is the responsibility of the driver.

The posted fuel economy on any vehicle is a benchmark that you may match if you drive with economy in mind. It is not a guarantee, but a goal that you may or may not achieve depending on your driving habits.

Because economy is largely your personal problem to figure out, not Toyota’s, they give you tools on the dash to help you achieve posted economy if that is your goal. The most useful of these tools in a Tacoma is the bar graph that displays instantaneous economy. If you want to achieve posted economy, you need to have your eye on that graph.

The number one thing to kill economy in a boxy truck, in my experience, is high freeway speeds beyond the point where the trucks poor aerodynamics start to matter. If you are watching the bar graph it will become apparent when you are starting to kill your economy.

I know this is not the answer you want to hear but your driving style is the reason for the poor mpg. To get the best possible mpg, try sticking to the speed limit (I know, sometimes hard to do..). I suggest also tracking your mpg to get a better overall idea on how you're doing. I use Fuelly. This is why the 4th generation Tacoma currently under development is rumored to have a 4 cylinder turbo engine. The gas mileage is pretty dismal for a mid size truck.

This thread is worthless without reading all of it! :p

Dude! I wanna see GPM and average MPH too! :)

You were either drafting a speeding 18 wheeler, or you’ve got those fancy dancy little low profile high pressure pizza cutters, don’t you? Good job, granny lightfoot!

Missing My Last Tacoma --- Had 11 Toyota trucks in the past and many other Toyota cars too.
Tires @ 36 PSI front and back helps a lot .... at 25,000 miles I get 14 to 22 .... depending on city, highway and hills and speed.

    My V-6 SR5 is a 4x2 also ....... deduct 1 to 2 miles for a 4x4 ... experienced from my past Tacomas.

I've only had three tank fulls since buying mine, first I couldn't hand calculate since I had no mileage. 2nd tank was 19.2, computer said 19.7, this tank I'm half way through at 212miles and computer says 21.6. I drive 30mi on the highway one way to work, keep it at or around 70. 19 TRD OR DBCS. While I am happy for this mileage, my Jeep did 14-15mpg, I still think a midsize truck should do better, but it is inline with the competition.

It’s how fast you accelerate as well...

    Ok, tailwinds or drafting?
