Bolt it to a 3/4 ton chevy frame, put a 79 d60 under the front, a 14 bolt out back, and a 6bt Cummins under the hood.

    A true Frankenstein monster.

Or stick with IFS / IRS, and go +6 LT on all 4 corners.

I have a Tacoma, and I love it. I have wheeled with a ZR2, stock vs stock, the ZR2 is a more capable truck. The reality is that it performs better at just about everything.
Long term the Tacoma likely will be more reliable and have a lower cost of ownership.
If I was purchasing an offroad style truck with no intentions of heavy modification the ZR2 would likely be first on my list.

I would get the ZR2. The DSSV suspension is the best on the market for EOM truck suspension. It won't have vibrations, buzzing, and engine surges. It has more horsepower and will everything better. It is not cheap though

This is purely anecdotal, but my coworker recently got a 2018 ZR2 and was doing Whipsaw with it when during a water crossing his engine died. The water was not high enough to have been the cause and later once he was towed out, it was confirmed that it was an unrelated engine problem. However due to sitting in the water after the engine blew, he now has water damage and originally Chevy was going to cover the blown motor, but changed their mind apparently and won't cover anything.

Coleradoo, only thing is I wouldn't wanna mess with that suspension, and buying a truck and not modding it is no fun. So get the Tacoma.

A couple small reasons why I went w/ the Tacoma; available sunroof (which the twins didn't have when I bought my 17', not sure if they now offer it), and the Tacoma rear seat fold down method, which as everyone knows folds down flat and has a hard surface, much easier to load up with stuff, or put a dog bed on it and carry the dog. From what I've seen the twins and the Ranger still have far inferior rear seat fold down methods; they either only fold partially, or have a sloped surface when folded down, and have carpet on the back, all deal breakers for me. The Zr2 suspension supposedly is better than a Pro. I'm still waiting for any of the mid-size trucks to come out with a performance motor. If one of the domestic manufacturers fixes their rear seat, and offers a decent motor, I'd look at that for my next truck. Until then, I don't see any reason to buy anything other than a Tacoma.

The ZR2 has 308hp compared to 278. 30 more is over 10% more. That is a good jump.

I would just settle for a 2019 Tacoma, especially now you can probably get one fully-loaded for about 35k-36k.

Stick w the Tacoma if your going midsize. If not go to a 1500 Silverado. Get the 6.2 liter or duramax diesel. Both have Allison 10 speed transmissions.

Do the SR 4x4 V6 which MSRPs at $32-34k. Add TrueTrac. If you have to go closer to $40k then that should cover a 5.0 F150 with 4x4 if you stick with XL.

No need to spend extra for iplay.

    None, yet
Colorado's seem nice but ultimately reliability issues would prevent me from getting one. I've had Ram 4x4, F150 4x4, Ranger 4x4 and they all failed me at some point and not even high mileage. That's why I went with Tacoma this time.

Just dont ever sell the ZR2 - resale value is horrible, especially when comparing it to the Tacoma resale value which is outstanding.
I trade off vehicles very frequently and had a Colorado, I lost a bunch on that one, it will be Tacoma's or 4runners for me here on out.

really? I know a guy that had a zr2, traded it in a couple years later for pretty much what he paid for it.

I don't think the resale is that great on the 3rd gen. To many of them out on the market. I gave up trying to sell or trade mine in.

I've spent a lot of time in a Colorado with the 2.8 duramax and a zr2 with the v6. Both have had less issues than my 3rd gen.
