I'm looking to cobble together another backup camera for when my tailgate is off the truck. I checked and an OEM Toyota backup camera appears to be around 6 or 7 hundred dollars. I'm looking for something a bit cheaper.

Is there anything special about the video signal output from the OEM camera? Or, will any generic camera produce a compatible video signal?

I've found this part "Toyota 90980 12520" which appears to be the connector that plugs into the harness for the tailgate backup camera.

I believe the OEM camera is 6 volts. If I can get 12 volts to a generic camera, and wire the video out to the correct video in on the "Toyota 90980 12520" harness, will I get video on the stock head unit? Or is the OEM backup camera producing some sort of proprietary video signal?

Also, is there a difference in the signal produced by a 6 volt camera compared to a 12 volt camera?

I don't know if there is anything special about it, don't think the truck uses the camera for any safety features.

I do know that the headunit will display any NTSC with ~1V signal. So pretty much any backup camera you can find. 6v or 12V, the video signal is the same

No clue about the camera specifics, but I'm pretty sure you can get one at the junkyard for a fraction of the cost of a new OEM one.

    Thanks for the info.

Bought that "Toyota 90980 12520" harness and a cheap backup camera. Got it working, and the camera seems to run fine from 12 or 6 volts, so I'm going to wire it up to the 6 volt supply.

The only thing I can't figure out is which ground to use for video and power. I found 2 grounds, and the video seemed fine using either ground. I'm going to try to use the ground paired with the video and see if that works.

I'll post the final setup & pinout when I'm done.

Got this finished. Hope someone can find this useful.

The bottom of the video image is a little jumpy. Tried a few different permutations of wiring it up and always had the same result. Not a huge deal, just needed something to get a general view while backing up.

The ??? is wired into the OEM harness, not sure if it's used or not. Didn't seem to do anything.

The 6 volt hot seems constant, it was hot in reverse and it all other gears.

Older thread but I’m doing my homework on the same topic. @caribe makaira do you have input on the correct pin outs to use for this?
