In 2020 Did Toyota change glass specification? I thought I saw a uvid with a Toyota spokesman stating they did for interior wind noise reduction. Anyone know if this is true? Did the windshield get thicker? The windshield in my 2019 is very susceptible to chipping. I have numerous small pencil point chips for what seem to be from tiny pebbles that wouldn't have pitted my 2016 Tunda windshield. Anyone comment on 5th generation 4runner windshield ? Is it a softy like the 4gen Tacoma? Thinking of getting a 2021 4runner before the redo them. I like my 2019 Trd pro in voodoo, however I don't need the bed (trailer rental is cheap) and could use more interior spac . Plus the 4.0, 5 speed is not setup to try and squeeze every possible mpg to the point it reduces driving enjoyment, atleast from what I've read. Any confirm this? I need to test drive one for a day.

I don't see any mention of 'acoustic' glass being used on the 4runners (2020, or 2021), so I would say no. It is being used on the 2020 Tacos.

As for the automatic in the 4runner, I think it's worse than the Tacomas, personally... at least compared to later model 3rd gen tacos with the software update. Have you driven one yet?

Yes, thicker glass is used in 2020 Tacoma’s to help quiet the cab. It’s part of Toyota’s philosophy of kaizen.

“Toyota implemented a 10-way power adjustable driver's seat in the 2020 model, which makes a huge difference in driver comfort. Other interior improvements include additional USB ports to keep all passengers connected, as well as thicker side windows to decrease wind noise inside of the cabin.”

“The philosophy of kaizen is one of Toyota's core values. It means 'continuous improvement'. ... Kaizen in practice means that all team members in all parts of the organisation are continuously looking for ways to improve operations, and people at every level in the company support this process of improvement.”

There's no documentation to support this. Press releases are loose at best.

I can only find that in 2019 Toyota switched the glazing to provide more passenger privacy and uv blocking.

The acoustic glass is still a premium in Toyota. The new 2020 highlander only gets the glass in the Limited and Platinum trim levels.

I work in manufacturing tech, and this was a short video I shared a few weeks with colleagues. For those not aware, kaizen and lean manufacturing is quite the contribution to world of how stuff is made. (Also, sorry for a Bloomberg clip, I know we’re all still recovering from his YouTube ad campaign.)

I wonder if the side glass in the front is now laminated.

You'd think if that was the case they'd trumpet it for safety. Unless it's a DOT mandate now maybe and everyone has to do it. I'd probably want the side windows to shatter and blow out in a crash rather than hitting it with my shoulder or head, though.

Does Your Car Have Laminated Glass?
A third of 2018 model-year vehicles have laminated glass in their side windows, AAA says. To find out whether your car has tempered or laminated side windows, read the label in the bottom corner the window, or check directly with the manufacturer. Make sure to check every window, as it’s common for at least one side window to be made from breakable tempered glass.

My 2020 4 x 4 I 4 Access cab is great - but the rear noise is bad at best. If they wanted to help the road noise they need to redesign the rear cab vents. I've been looking into the reasons and actually go my hands on a 2020 cab vent. The design is terrible and the "flaps" to keep out road noise is worse. When the flaps open they basically give a combined approx 2 x 16"? hole in the cab rear for noise. The flaps are so thin and flimsy that I do not believe they will ever reliably completely close. This added with the poor insulation inside over/around the vents make it worse.

"Kaizen" works - but you need to address the correct cause/issue and not band aid the issue with minor adjustments.

I'd like to see any relevant links to the the noise/glass changes . I expense of the glass changes for just noise sounds inaccurate. JMO

6D98ADC8-09D9-44CE-9977-E2707270635D.jpg Ok so I was debating on wether or not to stick my nose in here not not ... but I have to say a few things.

I have been installing automotive glass and managing several locations for one of the largest automotive glass companies in the world for right around 13 years now and the majority of the above comments are just simply incorrect.

The glass in the Tacoma (thickness, uv solar coating, laminated/tempered) has not changed. The only difference is the addition of the front camera for lane departure and with or without a GoPro mount.

the door glasses are not laminated and are the same thickness. All glass for windshields these days are made to the same spec as required by DOT regulations and with the exception of a few vehicles, they are all the same. (ie BMW i3 has lightweight glass for battery saving) all glass in vehicles imported or built in the US have the same UV solar tinting and most have the coveted “acoustic interlayer” ... this is a gimmick used as a sales tactic. It does nothing and is no different than any other windshield. Laminated door windows however, are in fact quieter. Part numbers and descriptions below. For 19 and 20

I had my 2020s windshield replaced at around 700 miles due to a huge crack from a rock. Now at about 4000 miles i have another small chip and a ton of small pits
but i do live in Arizona so thats pretty normal. id used to have to get my Wranglers windshield replaced every 3 or so months

I have not driven one yet. Will test drive a 4runner pro soon as the 2021s are out. Definitely don't want 3 row seating and the are heavier. With the 4.0 and 10%+ more lower rpm torque & 5 the speed I'm anticipating better briving performance than my 2019 Pro. Are my expectations off?

Eh I think the whole lower end torque argument is overblown. I've owned a 2nd gen taco and it didn't feel any different performance wise to me... technically the 3rd gens tow more, and have about the same 0-60 time, all while getting better mpg. Take that for what it's worth. Turn ECT on if you want the truck to feel more lively.

I think the only thing I like better about the 4runners is that the rear end doesn't howl, otherwise, I'd take a taco any day :D

I got a little howl in mine, it not enough to bother me. Overall I'm fine with the way the Tacoma drives. If the 5th gen 4runner drives about the same as the 3rd gen tacoma that would be fine with me.

4 runner is big money for an old ass vehicle. Looked at getting out my taco and maybe into one. 50k and is spartan. The 5 speed auto is archaic. Didn’t see the draw. Is def quieter inside than the taco. The taco has the same road noise as my JKR did and that was a soft top.

I agree, but its proven reliable and lots of support, and I like the bigger interior. Since I'm trading in 2019 Pro still under bumper to bumper warranty I aiming to get a 4runner Pro OTD with my Tacoma Pro as trade and 10-13K cash. I own title to the Tacoma so ya, The 4runner is 50K+ but I'm only putting out about 12K to get into one. I trade about every 2-3 years and usually works out I'm putting out 10-12K. Probably do the same with the 2021 4runner in a couple years if I get one.

I think this was something that was misquoted or incorrectly posted somewhere and copied over and over. If you google it you will find the same thing from articles in 2018 saying that the 2019 has thicker side glass.

Could Toyota’s press release be incorrect regarding thicker side window glass on the 2020 Taco? It’s possible, but not probable being that Toyota is a huge worldwide corporation. Tons of homework and many sets of corporate eyes go over a press release before its released to the media.

I would be interested to see what a micrometer measurement says between a ‘16-‘19 Tacoma’s side window glass and a 2020 model.

Good info, thanks for posting this.

If you check the Toyota parts site, the side glass for 2020, 2019 and 2018 (don't know about earlier) is 68101 and 68102. However, when you drill down, you see different years have different extra numbers, e.g., 68101-something.

I have no idea if they're actually different pieces.

I have a 2019, and the side window noise sometimes bothers me enough that I'd consider installing new ones if they really make a difference.
