I understand why F1 has a single tire manufacturer, why there are only five (or six?) dry compounds, and why teams must use multiple compounds. What I dont understand is why teams are limited each weekend to only the three dry compounds nominated by Pirelli. Why can't each team select whatever mix of compounds they think may work best for each car and driver at a particular track?

i think so Pirelli can designate the compound range they deem to be safe for the different loads on the tires that different circuits put on them , just like how they designate tire pressures and min and max camber settings

Typically they can choose how many of each compound. For this last race even that was mandated.

The reason for one tire supplier is $$$. As mentioned above, pirelli designates the compounds on grounds of performance and safety at each track, the origins of the must use different compounds during the race was a mandatory pit stop and tire selection would improve the spectacle. It was designed to create pit stops and tire strategy. Then refueling during the race went away. Now we have sub 2 second pit stops.

While it is easy to say pirelli should build better or different tires, they are building what the FIA tells them to build.

I don't buy the performance and safety explanation. The best performing tires aren't necessarily selected for the grid as a whole and certainly not for particular cars. And safety is is covered by Pirelli dictating pressures, etc, and providing teams with expert opinion on tire use. It's probably true that when track conditions are unsuitable for the nominated compounds it is less safe not to mention expensive for some teams. Williams and Haas can ill afford the cost of hitting the wall because they can't make a particular compound work. The back to back races at Silverstone prove the performsnce point. Different compounds were selected simply to "mix things up". So it's not performance unless it's in regard to limiting performance to somehow "improve the show". I don't really see that being the case other than cases like last weekend where it gave Red Bull a leg up over Merc. That was refreshing but this is supposed to be the pinnacle of motorsport and I don't think I'm a fan of seeing a vendor monkeying with outcomes from an office building.

From what I picked up during the post race interviews, it seems that Mercedes was running more downforce than Red Bull which killed their tires. Guess if you have an engine that much more powerful than anything else in the field, you can usually run a lot more downforce. Unfortunately with the temps, and increased tire pressures, it finally bit Mercedes. As soon as Mercedes gets a "cooler" race and not have to worry about tire wear, they will return to completely dominating the field.

I would love to see F1 come up with a rule that if your engine is down on power, you're free to do any type of upgrade to catch up to the leader instead of limiting upgrades across the field. Now if you just want one team to dominate (like Ferrari with Michael, and now Mercedes), you keep the rules "as is."

It will be soon, if not by the time he's retired he will have the title.
