Its just too dang expensive to develop those engines and hybrid power units. Most manufacturers think their money is better spent in more useful R&D.

I like the idea that F1 technology should be much less complicated, otherwise more will drop out.

I think the challenge is that while there are a number of other manufacturers out there, Redbull would also be selective in accepting a partner right now. Currently they are competing for podiums every weekend, a new engine supplier would have to have a fully developed hybrid program that could compete. The only suppliers that could even begin to support that would be competitors in WEC. I think realistically Porsche and Toyota would be the only Brands that could swoop in, and even those guys would struggle to earn points. Redbull is going to have some hard times in front of them, and I hate to see it.

I was thinking Toyota would be a good one. They champion hybrid systems and haven't really embraced fully electric like some other manufacturers have. They are also already in NHRA top fuel racing, so we know they like racing.

where exactly do you think engine tech is moving in the future ? Pretty certain hybrid small displacement turbos are likely part of the scenario , that or hydrogen fuel cell and / or full electric

If F1 wants to simplify its power unit it will be because they feel it is more appropriate for entertainment purposes for F1 and will not be anything to do with manufacturer's plans for future engine tech

My opinion. Get rid of the wings and aero add-ons and open up the engine formula. Most of the aero does not translate to road cars anyway....not including the Corollas and Civics around here with big bitchin' wings. IMSA has done a great job with all sorts of engines and the manufacturers flock to that series.

I'd rather see mechanical grip and some racing. Not two-by-two time trials. Are we defending the future of automotive technology by saying that F1 chooses the engines of the future? Let the manufactures decide what they want to build and let F1 devote their time to balancing the series. They could even add that index of efficiency trophy for the tree-huggers who like to use racing and green or carbon neutral in the same sentence as we jet these racecars all over the globe to put on the show. Oh, and let them enter more than two cars with only two earning manufacturer points. Again, just my opinion.

Its the manufacturer's that pushed the FIA to adopt the current engine formula because they could see that it more aligned with where the future of engine tech was headed and therefore the R&D they invested in would be applicable to their road cars .

"On good days, Albon is also able to create this [3/10ths] proximity to Max. Albon is young, but we are aware that if he can't stand the pressure, we can't afford to be standing on one leg when it comes to the world championship. That is the situation."
    - Helmet Marko

we know they are going for it next year full on. can Albon secure his seat given that statement? i doubt it.

who do you think? Hulk or Checo? my guess is Hulk.

    which would be fkn awesome.

did you read that Red Bull contacted him Thursday or Friday about replacing Albon for the weekend after Albon's initial Covid test came back inconclusive ?

Exactly. Red Bull really got screwed by Honda.
Actually I believe it was only Mercedes that truly wanted the current engine format. Gee I wonder why.
