WHAT! V6 at 75 using cruise you get 24-28? I am not kidding the best I ever saw on a tank in my 16 was 17.5 on a long highway trip using cruise set at 75... BTW all my mpg numbers are calculated not using the dumb computer...

I read post like yours and get quite jealous. If I was doing 75-80mph, I'm bobbing between 4th and 5th and won't see 6th unless I'm going down a nice hill. That is with a stock unloaded truck. On back roads around 50-60 mph, I have to give the vehicle a tap on the accelerator for a second to get it to drop back in to 5th. It loves to hang in 4th gear. No clue why. I have even had the transmission update. I may re-gear, but I'm still on the fence for putting money into it.

DUDE! Yes isnt that dumb...give it MORE gas and the car down-shifts....thats totally backwards of every other car in the world... Man I am so glad to hear you say that. NO ONE understands me and acts like I am dumb when I say that. Has your dealer done anything? What truck do you have?

you get 22??? I am from the midwest and speeds on highways here are 75 so I DO NOT expect to get 22 but 9...9 is not acceptable. Especially if the truck gets 19 in the city...no car/truck gets better city than highway other than hybrids with electric assist...

You know that may have been pat of it now that you mention it.
I just went with the STX. I really didn't want too much crap that would inevitably break and I'm pretty happy with my decision. The only thing I would have wanted would be heated seats and the factory led headlights which means spending a bunch more to get a lariat.

Yeah it happens often. There's the trip computer then when I calculate it at fill up it's around 23-25 for the whole tank

It is an 18 tacoma off-road. Dealer did the update no questions asked. The only thing noticeable about the update was when gradually accelerating it seemed to not be so quick to upshift which has been nice. Other than that, same issues.

Aerodynamics are a funny thing. There is a point where the shape of the vehicle consumes proportionately more fuel to go faster. This is why airplanes have a cruising speed for maximum range. They can fly faster than this speed, but it comes at the cost of fuel. If they go faster, they don’t make it there faster, the run out of fuel and can’t make it at all.

Tacoma’s don’t do well for economy at very fast freeway speeds. Their rating is not based on 75MPH. My economy goes way down if I really try to cook it on the freeway. If I keep it at the speed limit, it does pretty well even with 1-up tires and extra weight.

I recall some Bugatti Veyron info where the 30% of the horsepower was required to get 70% of the way to top it’s speed, then the other 70% of the horsepower was needed for that last 30% of its maximum speed, or something like that.

Hope you find a truck that suits your style OP. I would give a hard pass to any other Toyota products if I were you. The economy of the 5sp Runners is pretty bad, and as we all know the Tundra should come with its own fuel trailer.

Good luck with what you pick up next.

12 mpg sounds about right for towing a SxS, but 9 mpg unloaded is crazy low. I get about 12 mpg towing, but unloaded on the highway I get about 20 or so. Transmission shifts when you would expect it and it’ll hold gears when it should. I have about 4,300 miles on it now and it honestly feels better than when I first got it. Sounds like something might be amiss with yours. Hopefully they can get it figured out for you.

    I have a 2020 TRD OR DCSB. 3.5L AT. Manufactured 3/2020.

Currently at 3200 miles. In the first 1000 miles it was a bit erratic with shifting (though nowhere even near as bad as my previous vehicle; a 2009 Jeep JK did all through its life), but quickly got better between 500-1000 miles.

Now my Taco drives like an absolute dream. I’ve owned some nice vehicles in my life and this things drives so much better than they did.

There is no hunting and it likes to be in 6th when at highway speeds, and I average between 22-26mpg here in West Michigan pretty consistently, often using the radar cruise control where practical.

My friend who also owns a 2020 and has none of the issues you are stating either.

I think a good portion of the complaints may be attributed to people not being used to these new modern electronically controlled transmissions that have popped up in the past few years with variable TC lockup, multiple overdrive gears, and the logic they are programmed with and use to select gears/lockup for best fuel economy and performance (the logic they use is FAR more complex than older cars; using a TON of variables to select gears).

Instead it seems people are expecting firm, positive gear changes where it goes to, and stays in the highest gear until you really press the gas and cause it to kick down like the old hydraulically controlled transmissions (I’ll admit, having built/owned a couple muscle cars, I like that too; sadly it is just not efficient).

But in short, my 2020 exhibits none of the issues you stated and actually gets better gas mileage than the window sticker stated.

toyota aint never just goin the build a montana truck ( remember when they had NO speed limit)

some mid western states can legally run 80 .....85 mph

yet those hi-ways ONLY represent a single digit of the other interstate hi-ways

the density of traffic is considerably lower

MANY a vehicle will suffer drastically worse MPG at 85mpg

while turning the pyramid upside down may seem justifiable

    its NOT realistic
