I hear you man but after my 16 got the exact same mileage for 34k and I wasted so much time and energy modifying it FOR ECONOMY at Toyotas request....I am just sick of it and wish I was lucky like you to get one that works...not sure how there is such a discrepancy. Every other car I own I get way better then sticker except this thing...

2020 got some sort of revised coding for the transmission and people that have went from a 16-19 to a 20 have sung praises for the way the transmission now acts.

Not even then. Coastal VA is all flat road and at 80 on the interstate I see 19 to 19.5 max and that's running OVT's v1.05 mpg tune. Back it down to 60 and I see 22-23. I've seen 24.5 with a long road trip at 55, but only once.

Oh gotcha. You’re tuned. I considered it, but since I don’t plan on keeping it I deceived against it. Also sucks to pick up a 46k truck and have to mod it (pedal commander/OVtune) so it drives “properly” or more to my liking.

I've had the truck for about a month now ('16 OR) and while I was looking for one I was very hesitant to even look at 3rd gens bc of how many people cried wolf about the trannys. Having driven mine about 2k miles now I can easily say I'm glad I didn't discount them completely. Car before this was an audi a4 and I got really good at modulating the pedal for mileage, driving the truck the way I did the audi gets me 22-24 highway and 18-20 local. You really have to feather the gas to see the good numbers, only give it a much as it needs. I've also taken to cruising at ~65 since that seems to be the sweet spot for me.

That sucks, not sure what answers you are looking for. Try the tune, get rid of the truck, or deal with it. Lots of people recommend the tune, but there are also plenty of other truck options out there. Did you test drive the truck? Go take another for a spin. 12-13 highway is horrible. Maybe you got a lemon.

Exactly this, after reading all these 'complaints' I can only surmise that these people just dont know how to drive. My 18 has no problems at all, none, zilch, nada one. I consistently get 21-23mpg with mix combination highway/city driving, not trying to continue this flame war but I just cant understand these people who cry bloody murder when for most there is no issue at all. This engine needs to rev up to get into the power band, this is normal. I think people just need to let the truck do its thing and stop paying attention to what RPM or gear your in, you're going to get there, just relax.

Throttle modulation is a skill :gossip:

My '16 has been fine since updating the software a few years ago. MPG as advertised.

'19 with none of the issues listed. Was averaging 24.5mpg on my 50 mile commute to work. Average 19-22 around town.

I think if you're having major issues, you gotta blame yourself and not the truck. I drive it the same way I drove my Dakota, Ram, S10, etc.

Here's the truth about automatics they all suck they all hunt gears .Manufactures develop and program for gas mileage not performance. Your best off getting a manual transmission . Lots of people here will state oh I don't have hunting that's not true .They just get used to it and learn how much pedal is needed for driving situations its muscle memory .If possible trade it on a manual truck u will be a lot happier . don't waste your money on OV tune or some peddle commander like its going to do some magic trick to make your truck feel like a sports car .The only way u can make the truck perform to the best of its abilities is take it to a dyno shop where they can dyno it and do a proper tune to the truck . But be forewarned u will void your warranty .

    No offense, you sound delusional.

Automatic transmissions aren't some mythical new technology. I drive my truck down a highway... it stays in gear. If I'm cruising it goes to a higher gear. Fuel economy bro. If I need to go fast I hit the pedal and it downshifts.

This isn't rocket science. I've driven both manual and automatic. I prefer manual because its more fun, but automatics work fine.

I have a 19 and do not have these problems. I actually get better gas mileage driving 75-80 then i do going about 60-65. On a trip out of state to bentonville from san antonio i averaged about 20-21 miles per gallon. And this is hand calculated and going about 75-80 mph the whole way. If i go 60-65 i usually get around 18 mile per gallon. Kind of strange and does not make sense to me.

I wish it was tuned for MPG cause then I would get decent mileage. But mine is the like opposite of what a lot of people say. I read all the time "this truck is a dog and wont downshift", I wish I had that problem lol.
