Sounds about right. My double cab long bed off-road would get around there too. It managed about 22 mpg only once and that's only because I wasn't sure where I was going and kepted to between 55-65 mph. Anything faster and it dropped to about 17 mpg.

I was gonna mention that too. I was 1/4 of a qt short from the factory. Toping it off made a difference.
OP, check your ATF level yourself. The worst case scenario you'll be out of $10.00 (1qt of ATF fluid) and 20 min of your time.

OP, what's your driver score in the Toyota app ?

Only asking because I see none of the transmission shifting issues in my '20. My driver score is 98. Would have been 100 but I let my wife and son drive the truck a couple of times. What does it say about fast acceleration ?

Thats what my 4.7 v8 tundra got on an average day. If my tacoma ever got that i would of taken it out on the lake here in the winter... cut a hole in the ice and sunk it.

Man that is the dream right there. I am hoping the Toyota techs can figure this out. Trust me, it really hurts to read all these negative people say how much I suck at driving when in reality I am an excellent hypermiler in my other cars and drive this one no different. I LOVE Tacomas and want this to work as I wouldnt have bought the truck if I didnt still have faith in Toyota. We will see what happens, I should have some update today or tomorrow hopefully. Glad you are having such a good experience!

THANK YOU! Someone understands that if I am not going to get anywhere near advertised (while not towing) then I might as well have something to show for it. More power, more space, something...

Dude that is awesome. IDK I will download it and try it once I get the truck back. I do have a tracker on my insurance and I have never dipped below an A and usually even higher than that. The only "sudden breaking" that I may occasionally get is when someone cuts in front of me and my adaptive kicks in hard in my other cars. Havent used the adaptive feature much in the tacoma since I was just on rather empty interstate.

My 20 was kinda erratic at first. Drove it in s5 for about 5k miles and drove it like I drive all my toyotas, not lugging around getting after it. Switched back to regular Drive and it works fine. Rarely see 6th gear which is fine but it holds 5th when needed and into/out of 4th is fine. Average about 16mpg combined. On 255s w/ 2" lift. Give it time to sort itself out.

I had 5.29 gears, OVtune and still didn't hated the way it drove. Recently traded it for a new Raptor. Getting better mpg (15 vs 12/13) and 800-900 kms/tank (larger tank on the Raptor but it's nice not having to fuel up every 400 kms) not to mention it's more fun to drive.

At the end of the day the price I paid for the Taco along with all the mods was almost dollar for dollar the same as what I paid for the Raptor.

    Just a thought...

Go against everything you would normally do as a hypermiler.
-Fill the tank with 91 octane
-Mash the loud pedal. Don't spin the tires from every standing start, but give it more throttle input than you think is necessary. Because it is necessary, I think Toyota programmed the fly by wire input with a rather large sweep zone, probably so that the truck isn't over sensitive to small pedal movements. In any case just be more aggressive/positive/determined each time you step on th egas, like I said probably totally against your current mindset on throttle control. It's worth a shot.

I just got back from an errand to my local bank. A fairly new 5.7 ram pulls up along side of me at the tellers window next door. I hear nothing but loud metal to metal noises coming out of the engine area, plus as he's leaving the truck is missing cylinders something awful. This truck had to be at least $60 g's. Just goes to show there's other crap trucks than toyota.

I seen these comments on here before. Maybe its an AT thing? But that sounds horrible if you have to mash your pedal just not get rear ended.

Maybe because my truck came with 4.30 gears, not sure. I have never felt unsafe when trying to merge, my truck just gets up and goes. I actually have to tell myself to slow the fk down at times.

Sounds more like people pulling into traffic when they probably shouldn't be.

Funny, 8,000 threads on shitty transmissions, yet still, no problems according to TW. THATS the only thing wrong with it.

So you traded in the first one because of an issue. Then bought the same generation 2 years later and having the same issue and you are surprised o_O

You have no say, M/T grasshoppa!

Best to stay out of these A/T catfights.

"Whiners" vs gaslighting on the extreme ends of the scale.

    Not worth it lol.

Mine's an 18. Back before I tuned, it felt like it had 2 modes and 2 modes only at times:

    - Mode 1 the engine / trans would give me less than my old 4 cyl wrangler did on its worst days, never venturing above 2000 rpm. Felt slower than my 10 hp outboard going upriver.
    - Mode 2 kicked in with the pedal at > 70% travel, and would roast the tires and launch me to the moon.

I could never get it to operate anywhere in between, and Mode 2 would not kick in predictably. Pseudo-shifting myself in S mode the hardware performed flawlessly and the truck was great. So yes, by having the MT you avoid the worst of Toyota's programming and are able to better unlock the potential of the hardware, which is excellent.
