I use the Gaia app on both my iPhone and iPad, to me there is no comparison to looking over at the app on a 10” screen of my iPad versus my iPhone’s 3” screen. One major convenience is I don’t have to continually zoom in and out on the bigger screen to see side roads of the main trial. Another positive thing is I don’t have to put on my reading glasses or get the young guy @SR-71A to read the map for me :)

Looked at Gaia. I like it, but really I just use open topo maps on my handheld garmin anyway. That's all I'm really looking for, so me being cheap, probably won't go for Gaia instead of just not having it push to my sat nav screen from the phone. When it gets a little warmer I might start toying around with my phone(s). I'm "lucky" in that I have an android phone and my work phone is an iPhone so I get to use whichever platform works better :). I'll have to toy around with both.

I have Gaia, and the checkpoint feature is nice to mark spots you have been or are going too, but its setup as a "crow flies" and does not include road routing. with google offline maps, at least you can do route guidance. and I got tired last trip to NMW of leaving my tablet laying on the passenger seat and falling into the floor on big bumps/sudden stops, not to mention I want a place to mount my CB radio, and my baofeng radio that is out of the way.

I use a TechDeck from http://www.birddawgindustries.com/tech-deck.html and RamMounts for iPad and iPhone. I also now have my CB able to be held in the iPhone Ram mount

Can't download offline maps. For me that's the deal breaker.

Yes. Simply put you can run it till you need more out of it, then pay. I use Gaia Free, Garmin 64st, Google maps and a actual map. Nothing beats the paper map

That's why I use Gaia. Super easy to manage all my offline maps and only download the areas I need.

I normally roll with 4 digital maps. 2 trail and road maps for X reference (one being a bit of a sure shot map I've found), 1 depression map, and a satellite map. Most of the trail is a standard download, but I also take a few tiles of the satellite for major junctions for reference and also in sections where the trail clearly doesn't follow the trail map

Edit: I also have my body weight in paper maps from here to the Carolinas as well as a couple of compasses and a stand alone handheld GPS.

Looking at the Dobinson with top precleaner. The pre cleaner is what I want the most but it is not a deal breaker.

I know I already mentioned this, but Back Country Navigator Pro is my go-to mapping/gps app for Android

    https://www.backcountrynavigator.com/backcountry-navigator-pro

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.crittermap.backcountrynavigator.license

I paid the $14.99 for it, but have not paid any more. I download USGS maps for free. App works great offline. I have been using it for at least 5 years, 2 different phones. Phone mount on my dash. Keep phone plugged in to charge. Turn on tracks to see where I have been. I can't recommended it highly enough.

Gaia can do it but not for free. For how many apps allow you to do that for free, if I'm going for a smart phone app, not worth it. I've used Open GPX when it was just my phone, downloads Open Topo for what you need. But, I've only used it for trails that I know or areas that I know overall, so I don't need trail maps.
