2020 guys how you liking your transmission?

The entire purpose of this thread is to discuss these issues. If you can't bear to read about it, maybe you need to go. Besides, I'm sure most of the people having issues here have already contacted Toyota. I've been working with them since I got my truck and one of my problems has been addressed and we are working on the rest, so they do actually seem to give a crap, unlike the endless pile of dickheads on this thread.

 

This is my first Tacoma, so I have nothing to compare it to, but I have NO complaints. Seems to work well, no hunting as far as I'm concerned.

 

This generation does shift wonkey. What is stupid is anyone suggesting (or actually) returning a vehicle, or trading it in just B/C of the trans. Losing 6-10K on a trade, then purchasing another vehicle and getting hosed is probably another 6K wasted. That said, the TSB helped my 2016, and is probably "standard" tune on the 2020 ECU's. Bottom line is the engineers from the transmission team and engine team seem to have "agreed to disagree" or something. having a truck with peak power above 3500, and a transmission that doesn't want you to go over 2000 rpm is just piss-poor. It is Toyota bowing down to the "greenies". Funny thing is, if they just had it tuned properly for the power-band, it would probably get much better MPG. Transmission, interior wind noise, kazoo noise, rattling at WOT, blower motor, and CPS sensor aside...I still love the truck and plan on keeping it for a very long time. Lesson learned though on buying a new generation model year. I did this once before with a honda civic...the year that the engine blocks cracked without warning.

 

I have this theory and I think it is not going to be very popular with a lot of owners that have issues with their automatic transmission.
Apparently, not all Tacoma's shift the same. This is not because they have different hardware (the transmission). It is software related.
The programming of the transmission is adaptive. Give it time and the software will modify the shift points based on the drivers input during the learning period.
My conclusion is therefore that if the driver drives like an neanderthal, the transmission will learn this behaviour and present the driver with disappointing shift points. Which will result in a complaining owner here on TW.
On the other hand. If you drive the truck like a normal person, the transmission will tune itself in a way that is totally fine.

 

I really can’t stand the sluggish transmission in these trucks. Why can’t they put something better?

EXACTLY. No one can possibly say that there isn't an issue. The programming is entirely over complicated. I've driven 20 year old vehicles that have 4 speed OD, and they shift flawlessly. Before the TSB, I hated driving my truck. I just drove my brothers 2007 with 220K miles, and it drives flawless. Now are there some people that wouldn't know what a shift is if it bit them? Sure, but they aren't the ones complaining. It's the folks that understand transmissions and shifting that are bothered. ^THIS^ shifting logic is flawed. It is genius but entirely over-engineered. It's like VW "engineering". They're known for great "German engineering", but make arguably the least reliable vehicles of all time, with atrocious resale.

 

Just curious on why you purchased the truck then??? You did test drive it right?

This is a thread about transmission issues, so if you're not having any, why are you here? Why come here just to antagonize people like a 12 year old? You really need to stop being such a giant d!ckhead.

There are no issues. Stop acting like you are some authority on trannies. You have an opinion, just like everyone else. These transmissions are programmed for fuel efficiency. If you want to control the shift points, put it in “S” mode and knock yourself out. If Toyota put the shift points where you want them, you would be on a different thread complaining about getting low MPG.

 

I drove 10,000kM over three weeks, in all sorts of terrain, at all different speeds, and altitudes, on my trip to the Arctic Ocean and back in August, and can attest the above shift logic had the truck operating smoothly and achieving excellent fuel economy for what it is. No OV Tune, no TSB, no pedal commander, no regear, no ECT, 87 Octane. From what I hear it’s improved further in the 2020s. I’m sure most 2020 owners are loving their trucks.

 

They will never be able to improve it enough for those who hyper focus on when the tranny is shifting.

 

If we all have the same transmission with the same parts with the newest software/firmware update then in theory all of our transmissions should be acting very similar. Which leaves 1 denominator, Us as drivers. Either this is as simple as that or it’s way over my head. I’m leaning towards the simple side like most things in life Keep It Simple, Stupid (KISS)

5 weeks ago I purchased my 2020 Off Road Auto Transmission and love it, with one bigger exception that I am hoping is not going to plague me.

When I test drove the vehicle, I drove it both locally in town and highway. It had a total of 4 miles on it when I decided to pull the trigger.

Did some research on these, asked the salesperson about possible transmission "sluggishness" or "jerking" that I had read about. He said that Toyota redesigned the transmission in the 2020 and the reviews that I read also said the same thing.

When I am driving between 40-50 MPH, it seems like the transmission is definitely slipping or jerking and it's not just occasionally but almost always at those speeds. The RPM's are just slightly above 1000 when this happens.

When I am at slower speeds or higher speeds, it doesn't seem to happen.

Just curious if there is some sort of "break in" period on these? I asked the people at the dealership about this and that is what they said, but also said to bring it in if it continues after 3000 miles. Right now I have approx 1300 miles on it after 5 weeks.

I'm taking it on a road trip to Maine this week so a lot of highway driving.

Curious to know if anyone else has experienced anything like this? Maybe I am just imagining it?

This thread is asking 2020 Tacoma owners about their opinion, not just "transmission issues".

 

Sounds to me like your converter locking and unlocking. If that's the case its normal.
