Dude, I've put off buying one for my girl due to the stupid amount of choices there are.

    So yes, bring it!

I've got some wide angle eyepieces with good eye relief, so you can use them with glasses.

Problem is it would get destroyed on the trails.

My wife is considering joining, so maybe she'll hang at camp and guard it, lol

I've got some thoughts on that if you want to hear them. What's your budget?

For a first timer, I had looked at the Celestron NexStar's, and I would have a budget of about $1k.

I won't be buying anything like that until next year or so.

I found a few possible renters for my house, and so I'll do some apartment hunting these next days off.

First month+last month+security deposit means I'll have to fork out +$6k in move-in costs; hoping to find a place closer to the city with a garage.

$1000 is more than adequate for a good first scope. My first "real" scope was more like $400. A 80mm Meade.

    2 schools of thought:

    1) smaller scope with a motorized mount. Something like the Nexstar 6SE for $800 (8" is like $1200)

    b) larger scope with a manual mount. Meade Lightbridge dobsonian 12" for $999.

Bigger scope means more light gathered (can see dimmer objects), but motorized mount means you will likely be able to find specific objects much easier.

So what you're saying is, I'm on the right track o_O

I definitely know about scopes, light gathering, glass quality, etc.

I run S&B, Nightforce ATACR's, and everything in between on my long range rifles.

Cool, yeah a lot of people think a telescope's purpose is to magnify things, but that's really just an added (secondary) bonus. Primary function is light gathering. I have to still fight with my wife over magnification. When looking at some objects, she wants to max out the magnification, but all that does is make them dimmer and harder to see.

you interested in photography or anything? If so, I might suggest the AVX mount if you want to try your hand at photographing galaxies or other deep sky stuff. But as with anything, astrophotography is a black hole form which your wallet never escapes.

I am not interested in photography or astronomy because I'm not taking out a loan on my home for more hobbies

I quit at nightvision; I've got MOD3 duals on a ballistic helmet and I don't even use it :anonymous:
