    @Gunshot-6A
    @Wulf
    @esxcli

    Seeing as how this will fall on the established weekend, we can make Friday a day to all meet up?

    Tagged you guys since you've been there and would know the area better than the rest of us.

    @jbrandt you're like me in that you'd want to get back by the 20th, that'll work for me as well

    @BartMaster1234 you're in to drive together as mentioned

    Unsure if you'd want to leave on Wed/Thur to arrive for the weekend?

    I submitted my request for days off, just waiting for the approval...but don't see why I wouldn't get it.

    I'm waiting on seeing how the situation with my brother in law goes over the next week or so before I commit...they found a brain tumor in him last week and haven't determined yet how serious it is.

    Anyway if it turns out I can go I don't think the time off will be an issue, got plenty of PTO saved up and I need to give them 4 weeks notice so I've got some time to see what happens

    I'm up for caravaning but I don't know how realistic it would be for you guys up north to meet me down here or vice versa... Would have to look at the route and see where we could meet up that wouldn't put anyone out of the way

    Fuck man, sorry to hear that.

    This must be brain tumor week or something.

    My dad called me about a week ago and they found one in him, too. They seem to think it's benign, but it needs to come out. He has an appt with a brain surgeon on tuesday to find out more.

    My mother in-law died about 6 years ago of the same thing that took John McCain.

    Hope for the best. :cheers:

    Thanks man, sorry to hear about your dad. I've been hearing about more cases of them too lately. I found out about a month ago a friend of mine I haven't seen in awhile got diagnosed with a brain tumor and they were able to remove it, but it resulted in total hearing loss on his left side. Talked to him last week and he was just grateful that's all that happened. Crazy though

    I've done the drive from Cali before in 1 shot on a mountain bike trip. Was nice to get it out of the way, but we were so jacked up on red bulls and those starbucks coffee things. We got to Moab at like 7 or 8am, and we parked, got the bikes and went for a ride. It was a little brutal because we were uber tired and jacked on caffeine at the same time. Well, those of us who drove (it was a guided trip thing).

    The googles shows <13 hr drive from my house. Doable in a day, but damn it's been a while since I've iron manned a drive like that.

    The only other times I've been to Moab is traveling with the family, and I think we camped outside of Ely NV. Couldn't iron man it with the kids, lol.

    I'm good to leave Wednesday. Earlier we leave = earlier we get there, and more chances to scope out a spot to camp.

    Because I'm a nerd, I've been mapping out camp spots and the trails on google earth, and will download to my phone with BC Nav. Will share with the group of course....

    So what's the Comms sitch like?

    I just have a couple GMRS radios, but if everyone has CBs, I could be persuaded to get one installed.

    You HAM dorks are out of luck, I'm not doing HAM... :crapstorm:

    Oh yes, I've seen those. Just not willing to get the license quite yet.

    Way too much effort just to be able to talk with the dude 30' ahead (or behind) me, lol

    I have my GMRS license, I use the GMRS frequencies on my Baofeng when I go camping. I’ve got CB too though.

    Oh yea, I went rouge and was using the GMRS freqs for a while before I realized realize that channels 1-9 (iirc) were GMRS and required the license, and the other freqs were the lower power toy power ranger radio frequencies.

    I guess all I need to do is pay my $50 or whatever it is to have a license for those higher power freqs. No test like with the HAM license.

    I'm willing to stretch the rules on the GMRS a bit, but it seems like those HAM nerds police themselves a lot more, and the fines are heavier too, I think.

    I don't feel like I should have to take some test and pay a bunch of money when all I need to do is talk to the trucks in my group.

    Hell, I can just yell obscenities out the window just as easily.

    Otoh, the ham test is $15. And it's easy. :notsure:

    The license it like $70 though, isn't it?

    I'll admit, though, that a lot of the aversion I have to HAM is simply not wanting to be like those instagram dweebs that have like 6 screens on their dash and 6 different radios.

    I'm old (ish), and set in my ways. Get off my lawn you damn kids.

    Nope, that's built into the cost of the test.

    And with something like hamstudy.org, you don't even need to buy a book.

    I don't think the FCC has done a HAM violation arrest in years, and the ones they have done have been big fish. Certainly not an offroader just communicating with buddies. There's a list of the arrests on the FCC website you can look at.

    Anyway the test is cheap and easy but I wouldn't worry about getting fined for not being licensed on a $20 handheld

    But if you pass the test, the FCC gives you a sweet code name. :spy:
