    2021 TRD Off-Road
    Hi everyone,

I just bought my first Tacoma, a 2021 TRD Off-Road Premium. This forum was one of the reasons I decided to pull the trigger. The documentation and community here is far better than that of any other vehicle I've owned.

Overall, I love the truck. My one disappointment is that I wasn't able to get PVM. (It looks like PVM/MTM only comes on manual double cab TRD Off-Roads for 2021, at least in the US.)

I found a couple threads attempting to gauge the difficulty of retrofitting the feature to older years and the general consensus is right. It's cost prohibitive. As best I can tell, a truck needs (at least) the following parts for PVM:
    • Head Unit
    • Parking Assist Computer
    • Chassis Wiring
    • Rear Tailgate Camera + Wire
    • Front Grill Camera + Wire
    • Left/Right Mirror Cameras + Wire
    • PVM Dash Switch
Obviously, to install all of those into a 2019 or older truck would be insane. However, it looks like 2020+ Premium Tech models might already have the following correct parts from the factory:
    • Head Unit
    • Parking Assist Computer
    • Chassis Wiring
    • Rear Tailgate Camera + Wire
In other words, most of the expensive parts could be there already. If all you need is cameras, a switch, and a couple connectors, perhaps it's feasible. My questions are:
    • Are there any parts required for PVM missing from the first list?
    • Am I correct about those parts being shared across trim levels?

I'll try to keep this WIP post updated with whatever technical information I end up with.

I'm going to start by trying to confirm whether the key electronic parts are compatible. This investigation will probably prove that a retrofit is still a terrible idea even on 2020+ models, but at least I'll know for sure.

It seems like Toyota may not have updated the 'WHAT THIS FITS' data on many of their parts for 2021 models. I was hoping to compare part numbers between 2021 Limited, TRD Pro, and TRD Off-Roads but straight up can't find ANYTHING listed as fitting the 2021 TRD Pro on their site. Thankfully the parts which fit 2021 Limiteds look up to date, so they'll be useful for comparing against TRD Off-Roads.

Here's what I've learned from Toyota's parts catalog so far:

    Head Unit
There's a total of 23 listed. Of those, the following three look like they could be ones in US tech pack trucks:
Only one mentions JBL in the description. I'd imagine that's the unit in premium pack trucks. It's possible that ALL of these are compatible given that TRD Pros can come with or without the JBL system. I assume that the Parking Assist Computer is what's compositing the multiple video feeds together, while the head unit simply displays whatever feed it gets. Looking good.

Separately, I found a post which lists these part numbers:
    • 86140-04230 - Receiver, Radio and Display, USA spec without navigation
    • 86140-04200 - Receiver, Radio and Display, USA spec with navigation
    • 86140-04210 - Receiver, Radio and Display, USA spec with navigation and JBL
    Parking Assist Computer
    These four computers are listed:
I can't imagine what the difference is between the separate 'Limited' and 'Limited Nightshade' computers are, but Jeff's post about part numbers for PVM makes me wonder if the descriptions here are even trustworthy. Interestingly, I don't see "86792-35020 (Limited Long Wheelbase)" from Jeff's post listed anymore. The Sport/Off-Road one mentions PVM in its description, which is a good sign.

    Chassis Wiring

I'll probably remove the panel covering my Parking Assist Computer and take a look at those wires if the rest of these parts look like they might work.

    Rear Tailgate Camera

    These two cameras are listed:
I think one of these is a wide angle lens and the other isn't. Womp womp. This means PVM would likely require a rear camera swap. No connecting wire is shown on the diagram so I maybe it's inside the tailgate already?

Looks like there's only one tailgate part number for 2020+ so at least those are shared across trims.

    Front Grill Camera + Wire

    There are three cameras listed:
    Two Connector Wires:
Looks like different cameras are used on the Limited vs TRD Pro. This would make sense based on the two different rear camera variants listed. No idea what the third one could be for.

In photos it looks like the Pro and Limited front Cameras are located at slightly different positions within their respective grills. Sport/Off-Roads may need a new grill in order to properly mount a camera, but based on the Tacoma builder pics and information the grill doesn't change when you add a camera to Off-Roads. There are so many grill part numbers I'm not bothering to verify this right now.

    Left/Right Mirrors & Cameras

These are the same across all trims with PVM/MTM. They look like they include attached wiring.
    PVM Dash Switch

This is the same across all trims with PVM/MTM.

Thanks to Jeff Lange for his post with part numbers and their associated trims, DeusExMachina, and Avocadohills for their helpful earlier posts about this.

    Unknowns:
    • What chassis wiring is needed?
    • Does the PAC support PVM as indicated by the part description?
    • Does the stock Sport/Off-Road grill have the correct dimensions for the camera as indicated in photos?
    • Which rear camera comes with stock Sport/Offroads?
    Knowns:
    • Need Front Camera + Connecting Wire
    • Need Side Mirrors + Cameras
    • Need PVM Dash Switch
For now, I'll poke around my truck's wiring to see what's possible. Maybe once some wrecks start showing up on eBay I can scoop some battered parts and test things out.

If anybody with PVM/MTM reads this and wants to help out, could you look behind your lower left switch panel and tell me where the cable plugged into the 'View' button goes?

I'll be keeping an eye on this thread. It would be cool to see what it takes to pull this off.

We have PVM on my wife’s new Highlander and we really like it, it’s pretty cool. Not trying to rain on your parade but installing it after market , too much $$$, too much hassle and headaches, too many things to f up. My truck doesn’t have it and I don’t miss it. But if you actually install it I wish you good fortune, hope it goes well. Keep us up dated.

The OP hasn’t checked in since July 2. I’m thinking his PVM project was just a fleeting dream, it never came to fruition. Three posts and gone.

This would be great. I have looked into this a bit myself but I can't find enough information about switches or software versions that might be needed.

I would appreciate some additional information. My 23 Tacoma is fully equipped, except for the PVM feature which I regret not purchasing. I currently have both the front grill and tailgate cameras installed, and I am curious if adding the under mirror cameras and switch would be compatible with my premium JBL head unit. Thank you for your input.
