Looking at buying with 20,000 miles. Any Known problems with this configuration? This would be a daily driver with 90% non highway miles. I’m assuming this engine would have enough power to tow a zero turn mower or household appliances and such with no issues?
Also this is a Toyota certified pre own truck for what that matters. Thanks

    FINALLY off the island!

I've got the same year/configuration as this one, but mine is a 2wd(opposite of you- I do at least 90% highway). Best vehicle I've ever owned and I've got a little over 30k miles(again, mostly highway) on it.

I don't tow anything, however, I've got a pop-up camper that's been sitting in the bed full-time for over 4 months. It adds roughly 500# with the camper itself and gear I'm carrying in it. I have noticed a slight decrease in mileage(1-2 mpg) due to weight/aerodynamics, but you will be towing and that isn't as affected by wind.

Most will say the 4cyl is a dog in the power-department, but I find it suits me fine. Anything more and I'd be tempted to drive faster and that hurts fuel economy even more! Oil changed are easier with the 4cyl anyways as you dont have to remove any plates to get to the STANDARD TWIST-OFF FILTER.

Even with the SR you get all the safety features and a nice stereo(bad speakers though) that integrates nicely with Android Auto(or CarPlay I'm assuming). Being Toyota Certified, if the price is decent I say go for it! Just remember not to get too crazy with the towing numbers.

Not a 3rd gen, but I've been daily driving my '06 regular cab for 11+ years and it has been extremely reliable and requires very little maintenance. Its slow, for sure, but I've gotten used to it and it hauls pretty much anything I need it to with relative ease.

I wouldn't hesitate to get another Tacoma with the 2TR engine.

I have a 2021 same set up. Love it.

Tough as nails and an easy do it yourself type truck.

Pretty good configuration for general small truck duties. It will tow your mower & haul appliances just fine. As long as you don't expect sports car performance, I'm sure you will enjoy it.

Just give it a good test drive & inspection BEFORE you buy.

You shouldn't have a problem towing or carrying those items, just give yourself plenty of time to get there. I test drove a 2020 sr 4x4 access cab 4 cylinder, and i thought it had barely enough power to move itself. Trucks weight made it feel noticeably underpowered. Maybe its better on the highway once it gets rolling, idk, my test drive was in the city where it was on hilly streets. I had to scream the guts out of the motor going back up the road to the dealer.

My son’s 2.7L was a slug for the first 1500 miles. The engine and transmission are much better after this initial break-in period.

Does the truck you are looking at have a price?

As good as a 4cyl Tacoma is. I'd also look at a domestic short bed reg cab v6 for light towing duties.

Might save some money up front. If it wasn't for towing I'd definitely get the Toyota.

The 2.7L actually has very good low end torque for city towing applications.

Thanks for all the good advice, it’s amazing the difference of opinion on the 4 cylinders power output, some are extremely happy with it and some say it barely pushes itself. I will definitely be doing some serious test driving.

The 2.7 is a rockstar. If my '05 (reg cab 5mt) would have been 4wd I'd still own it.
I want to say that engine is still built in Japan. Anyone?

I've heard the 2.7 is pretty solid. They've been using it in the tacos since 2005

Love my 4cyl. Mine being Manual helps. Its bulletproof, has ease of maintenance. Go take it for a test drive.

We have a 2006 4-cylinder access cab. My son drives it now and I think the power is adequate. I went to test drive a 2020 in the same configuration (with intention to purchase) and was disappointed. Perhaps the new trucks are heavier or the transmission is different, but I ended up with the 6-cylinder this time. Your results may vary, and a low-mileage, certified Tacoma is certainly appealing. As others have said, I recommend a thorough test drive. Good luck!

These 4banger SR5 4x4's are pretty bomb proof. Absolutely love mine and has yet to leave me stuck anywhere. Also really easy to maintain, so much space in that engine bay.

    You'll effing love it.
