Toyota's electronics leaves a lot to be desired for sure.
    1. You shouldn't have to "tether" to any head unit to use Apple Carplay.
    2. You should not ever resort to using a "dongle" just so you don't have to tether your Iphone.

    There is better.

Toyota is not known for its advanced technology.

What they are known for is reliability. If you want fancy features, auto stop start, etc, then go over to a different brand.

No shame in wanting something “fancier.” I’m sure we have all considered it. But I would rather outdated Apple CarPlay functionality over my vehicle shutting off every time I pull up to a light.

I only found out about the "Dongle" because my iPhone connection was ruined when I dropped it at the beach.

Tethering it to charge was a Royal PITA so I had to make sure it was fully charged before I used the Google Maps (Stand Alone) on the phone.

EDIT: I have a iPhone charger that allows me to charge without plugging it in.

With the "Dongle", I have the capability to use Google Maps on the dash display without tethering my phone.

As for charging, I can use the charger that comes OEM with my Sport in the center console...but it gets hot over time so I don't keep my phone on there very long.

We adapt and overcome obstacles in life...I think we can do the same with our vehicles...even if we think we shouldn't have to.
