    Hey guys,

My 2020 Taco with less than 2000 miles on it has this annoying metal rattle that sounds like its coming from under the truck on the drivers side. Not sure what it is. Only hear it when I’m accelerating. Been under my truck numerous times check the heat shields and can’t figure it out. Checked the cat shield too, doesn’t seem loose. It’s driving me crazy!!! I have a video of the sound. Sorry about the quality and wind. Has anyone heard this sound before?

It’s your injector cleaning cycle. The dealer says it’s normal.

I thought that only happened when the truck is in park.

Get a rubber mallet, get under the car and start gently tapping the underside, frame, exhaust, floor...whatever. You'll find it. If you don't, strap the wife to the hood and go for a ride. She'll find it for you.

Edit: If you hit the tire be prepared for the mallet to come back at you. Ask my junior service tech how he knows. Broken nose. Never came back.

I was under the truck yesterday tapping everything... no joy. My only guess at this point is the heat shield on the manifold. I noticed that it is the only heat shield that’s sort of wrapped around. I only hear the noise when I accelerate

Oh Holy mother of Gawd, not at acceleration? Ah...just kidding. I have no idea. I have driven with a service tech hanging out the door, upside down, at 45mph on a gravel road, backwards to find a rattle. Good luck, we're all counting on you.

I appreciate it lol. Yeah I already know if I take it in they will just say they can’t reproduce the sound.

Could be a catalytic converter. A highlander of mine with less than 10k miles make a rattling noise and I couldn't figure it out until a forum member suggested it might be the CC. The dealer replaced it and the noise was gone.

Good to know, I initially thought that, but thought it would be weird for a new truck to have a defective CC. Will bring that up if I take it in. Thanks

Can you get a better audio of the sound? I can't seem to hear anything other than wind noise.

I've got a similar rattle that I've spent a good bit of time under there trying to isolate. And can't. Sounds like a loose heat shield, or something rattling against a brake rotor shield. And it is pretty damn loud. But can find nothing. Sounds like it is coming from right rear. Next step is to pick up a gopro and put it underneath to see if that may help me isolate it. I've spent a good couple hours under there checking everything I could think of (even pulled the spare off), and no joy. Have not heard of anyone else having the same.

Mine does it upon decelerating right hand turns only.

Did you ever figure this one out? My 1999 has a rattle on deceleration as well.

Never did figure it out. But I have since found it happened much more frequently (basically almost constantly on those decelerating right turns) when the tires were in need of rotation. Can't understand that. With the Cooper ST Maxx's, I'd been doing front to back, back to front rotations. But a few months ago, it was clear the FTB / BTF rotation was not cutting it as the coopers were loud as hell, and riding rough. I did a cross rotation of the tires about 3500 miles ago, and the noise almost completely disappeared immediately. I'd still get it every once in a great while (maybe once a week), only this time while driving straight line and decelerating.

Once I put the RLD canopy on and added the temporary solution of a set of Hellwig helper springs until I order up some Deavers, the sound has completely disappeared. Haven't had it happen in about 2 months of driving now.

My best guess at this point, is something with the right rear leaf. Just the right set of vibrations, and the leaf pack was slapping / rattling somehow. The noise didn't seem like it could be that (again, more of a very loud, tinny heat shield type rattle), but I can't explain otherwise why it went completely away with the addition of the helper spring.

springs....interesting. I'll maybe give them a shot of lube to see if that does anything. Springs would be consistent with when things get wet, it tends to slow or silence the noise. The tinny heat shield rattle sound is same for me, and obviously I've banged on everything under that truck. The deceleration thing is weird though....maybe the spring is under less torque on deceleration, allowing some movement?

Gotta be something else. My 2020 doesn't do any rattling. Engine is pretty quiet, but does make more mechanical sounds than my v8 tundra did if you listen closely.

I had also noticed it increased substantially in frequency (and situation, like driving straight line and getting the rattle) the one time I hooked up my camp trailer to tow it a short distance. The additional weight on the back aggravated the situation, whatever it was. Very odd. But makes me lean even more toward something with the leaf pack. Just a mystery I never could figure out, and hopefully no longer have to try.

Can't remember if I attached a video of the noise, but here it is:
