Mine came with the maps and all I could think was how much was this adding to the price tag as I will never use it. Google is king!

Okay, I know this is about the 2020 navigation, but just wanted to share my experience. I have an '18 OR that came with the built in navigation and I've used it a few times. There are times when it works and there are times that it can't find a location no matter how I search for it. I prefer to use Google Maps via my bluetooth connection because of its ease of use and always being up to date. Last I read to get updated maps for the built in navigation you have to pay $150. With today's technology Toyota should just update the maps remotely via a download. Just sharing my experience.

I 100% agree with this. I’ve always thought the OEM maps are terrible. It doesn’t matter if it’s Toyota, Lexus, Ford, Range Rover, etc they are all terrible.

the only thing that bugs me about my head unit that doesn’t have maps is that it has a map button. I wish I could map that button to the maps on my phone through CarPlay. I’m planning to just replace my HU because of that stupid button :D.

Waze is so much better than that entune garbage. Real time traffic rerouting and road hazards. Hard pass on entune. Offline maps make any advantage to entune meaningless.

My Etune app supports ONE additional app and that is Amazon Alexia..... not sure if they changed from 2019 to 2020 but Entune is a POS in the 2020's

Yea, I was looking at the diamond backs and they are definitely dope! Only thing is I car camp and like to sleep in the back of the truck, so a shell makes more sense and since I am going to have to pay for the cover now anyway, might as well just go for the shell

I tried to use Alexa, and if you don't have dynamic nav, you can't can't use her. Plus I think that they haven't added the Tacoma to the Alexa auto yet because it wasn't specified on the Alexa auto app

For only 150 to upgrade is not bad. But wait, you are able to do Bluetooth Google maps. How? My Android auto isn't wireless or do I have to tweek it for that to work?

As long as you remember to download those offline maps... grab the phone, unlock it, open the app, select the area, wait for it to download... oh wait, decided not to go there, going here instead... download a new map, etc.

What I hate most about Carplay/Android Auto is that it relies on your phone. With built in maps, you just enter an address anywhere in the country, or even pick a GPS coordinate and Go. You don't have to think about it, wait for the phone to connect, nothing... It's just all there, ready to go, anytime, anywhere.

And most of the time it does the job perfectly fine. Just my opinion.

Should have mentioned that I can hear the turn by turn directions via the bluetooth, but the map is only visible on the phone :anonymous:. Even for $150 we shouldn't have to pay to get updated maps. Google just automatically updates the maps without having to do anything.

I travel to remote areas all the time without cell service on forrest service roads and such, it’s not as bad as you are trying to make it. It’s very easy and far superior. Maps stay updated too.

I have never run into a situation where I could not get my maps.. does the built-in nav now about road closures? Traffic? Rerouting on the fly instantly? Speed traps? Road construction? I never used it.. so asking seriously.

With that said. If you are an outdoors person, you owe it to yourself to give Google Maps an honest try. I find fishing and hunting spots all the time and save them to different folders in Google Maps for recall later. I get it though, built in nav is easy and some people just don’t like change but Google Maps goes far beyond just vehicle navigation.

Lol, I’m sure you’re asking seriously but there’s not a chance in hell Entune does that. I was in my house for almost 10 years before I could even enter my address. The maps are absolutely terrible and as mentioned, they don’t auto-update so unless you pay to play they stay outdated.

People like you without smartphones attached at the hip are rare. It’s just going to get worse for people like you because it starting to get as essential as a computer.

I have unlimited data, so same thing I would get charged if I stayed at home the same few weeks.

Waze finds routes you don’t know about when traffic gets bad. It’s made life hell for some people because it alerted everyone to some people’s favorite short cuts. Shit you just don’t find manually looking for things. Adding a stop to a already planned route is easy. Sat nav is far behind the times.

A lot of the dams I visit don’t have good service to no service. I travel many miles for work every week. Not had an issue ditching sat nav for a smartphone.

The only time i run into an issue is when there is no service and I need to load a map to get out of that area. Unfortunately, google maps service is initiated via cell coverage and then uses gps for location tracking. With that said, I prefer the interface for android car play being able to control spotify and use google voice!! Still, in dash nav would be cool!

I have unlimited data so no issue on that here!

So you have the HU with nav then! Unfortunately, as far as I know, the HU does not support Android Auto Wireless. So you must plug it in to be able to use the map button on the HU.
