2020 Tacoma Tailgate won't unlock

For some reason, my tailgate was LOCKED when I got it back from being serviced at the dealership. I can't unlock it. I tried using the hidden key in the fob, which DOES fit and it DOES turn in both directions. But it DOES NOT unlock. Need help. Trying to pack for vacation but can't get in!

 

try unlocking door switch and then if that doesnt work I would take it back unless you want to take apart the tailgate lock

 

Climb in the bed and take off the plastic cover on the tailgate to investigate. Maybe take a pic or 2 & report back

 

I can't get into the bed. The tailgate is locked and the cover is on.

Did the truck come with an actual key that looked similar to a mixture of the hidden key and an actual key? That one is for the tailgate.

If it did, I'm not sure where to look for it. There is not one in the glove box.

 

Center console? Center console lid?

How did it end up locked in the first place? Lol

 

Thanks... I looked under the lid of the center console. There is a molded clip there where there should be a key, but there is no key in it. I also looked under the back seats and in the bag where the jack handle is. No joy.

The tailgate must've gotten locked at the dealership when they were repairing some damage from a minor accident (broken taillight and a small fender buckle. The work they did looks great. They would've had to remove the tailgate to do the repairs. Now if only I could get back in... hmmm...

 

Maybe they used your key to lock it, and forgot to give it back or tucked it away somewhere hidden? I'd talk to the dealership's service department at this point. They locked it, so they must have had a key.

 

Your actuator is unplugged or has failed.

 

Oh and I forced the left corner up on my oem cover and my wife reached in and pulled the handle with a finger to unlock the cover. Still waterproof.

 

Do you feel resistance when you try to pull the latch? Try moving the tailgate in and out to see if it's jammed. I wouldn't think the key would turn in both directions if it was the wrong key. Do you feel/hear the tailgate lock attempting to unlock/lock with the key? I doubt the linkage is damaged, but anything is possible.

A coat hanger might be able to unlock the cover

 

The shop is just going to have to force the cover open if some linkage or something wasn't put back together correctly, of course if you ruin it, they're probably not gonna help you with it.
