Almost assuredly requires you to plug it in. The entire screen is run by the phone and the power consumption would be substantial to the point where you’d want to plug it in anyway.

There are some wireless options out there but all reports are that they are very.bad.

I think BMW might be the only manufacturer to offer wireless Car Play and not sure anyone is doing it with Android Auto. There are some after market decks that have it though I believe (Pioneer, Alpine?)

So right now I get in my truck with my phone in my pocket and I can play my tunes from my phone. With the 2020 I have to pull it out and plug it in to listen to my tunes? That fucking sucks if you ask me.

Wireless carplay/Android auto requires wifi. Bluetooth doesn't have the bandwidth for it. If the new system has Entune 3.0, it likely will have wifi support. It's possible they'll support wireless Android auto.

You'll still be able to use your phone the same way as before. You just have the additional option to plug in and have your phone mirrored.

Since the 2020 Avalon doesn't have wireless Android Auto/Apple Carplay I don't see the 2020 Tacoma having it, unfortunately...

Apologies to ktbell444, I didn't catch the word "wireless" in his post. He's quite correct.

He's referring to WIRELESS Car Play / Android Auto.

Ah yes, my apologies. AFAIK wireless Carplay is still a BMW exclusive. At one point it was rumored that Volvo was going to do an upgrade to it, but supposedly it didn't test well.

Ah. Bummer. They're probably software limited then. From what I've found researching Entune 3.0, the units have wifi antennas which means they're technically capable of wireless. Whether they implement it or not is another story.

Yeah and I've seen reviews on the new X5 that the wireless Carplay has constant, intermittent connectivity issues.

Since the biggest difference between the 19 and 20 is the head unit, how likely is it that a guy could just... Order the 2020 head unit and throw it into a 19? Worst case scenario there's 3rd parties that have Carplay and android auto.

The new unit will likely be so high priced you may not want to or Toyota changes the wiring harness or something that makes it not compatible.

Which is a BMW head unit. The Avalon is the closest to the 2020 Tacoma (based off of looks and size of the screen). The head unit in the Supra isn't even touch screen AND only the highest package comes with wireless compatibility.

That's arguably NOT the biggest difference between the 19 and 20

Power seat and Car Play are the reasons I'm waiting on a 2020. Car play you can retrofit with an aftermarket in dash, but the seat would be expensive and painful retrofit. I test drove a 2019 and even if it had CarPlay I wouldn't have purchased because I just couldn't get comfortable....and I drove an FJ for 5 years, so it isn't like I'm super picky.

Yeah. Seats AND headlights are two of the things that kept me out of a Taco when I last bought.

The seats and lights will be a good reason to jack up the price another $2000 for what most would consider a tiny little truck. Over $50K for a Tacoma, pro or not is getting crazy expensive.

I know, don't tell me, they will sell every truck they build.
