Hello everyone, I am considering getting back into a Tacoma for the reason it’s easier to maneuver and park around town. I will also be using this truck to pull my boat. The truck I’m looking at is a 2020 double cab TRD Off Road with a short bed. I had a 2012 with the 4.0 and have heard the newer trucks don’t have the take off power or pulling power of the older trucks . I’m just looking for opinions on the power of these trucks and how are they at towing. Thanks

Unless you’re towing a yacht these days, it’ll do just as well as your 2012 did

Not sure if this is same or different than last gen but reverse in manual trans is so freaking tall, uphill backing up while towing requires serious clutch slipping. Only complaint towing and only happens at boat launches but it is a struggle for sure

The engine in the 3rg gens are not the limiting factor for towing.

Also, I think the 3rg gen has a slightly higher towing capacity]

keep it below 3500lbs and it does fine. If your towing more on a regular basis time for a Tundra.

It’s a $100 mod, but the anytime 2Lo mod solves much of that issue for the MT.

I would think so, but caveat emptor. Let me see if I can find the thread.

OP I’ve found the opposite, our 3rd Gen pulls the same 19ft RV better and with lower temps than our 2005 ever did.

In my old range rover, it listed low range as having a 2,200lb towing capacity increase. Wonder what the effects may be on the taco (legally, none, of course)

That's an odd one, I know you could probably pull a house off the foundation in low range, but cant really drive on the roads in low range. Think the highest gear ive been in low range was 3rd. Higher than that I just to go hi range. I'm sure the tundra pulling a space ship was in lo but they werent exactly obeying traffic laws.

It's like people don't realize 40 more HP is good for towing at anything over idle.

But but the 2nd gen is obviously better at everything than the 3rd gen remember? HP is just a numbero_O

I had a ‘92 22RE 4x4 with manual hubs. I pulled some heavy ass sailboats from the yard to the boat shows. 10k boats with keel. 4lo and didn’t lock the front hubs and 25mph down the access road. 5-10 miles was about the distance if I recall. It’s been 20+ years of course. Starts we’re only a bit tricky in the manual, but the power was sufficient. Gave myself tons of stopping distance though.

    Low gears are beasts.
